Vonage Aims To Stay On Its Growth Path With New Equipment

January 4, 2005

By Reinhardt Krause

When Vonage Holdings unveils new gear at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, the company should have something to crow about.

The Edison, N.J.-based startup, which sells phone service via the Internet, says it's nearing 400,000 subscribers. Not bad for a company that had just 85,000 users at the end of 2003.

Even so, 2005 could be a challenging year for Vonage. Cable TV firms and others are rolling out their own online phone services, which rely on a technology called VoIP, or voice over Internet protocol.

With VoIP competition growing, Vonage looks to woo consumers with snazzy new equipment. At the show, Vonage and partners will demonstrate a new videophone, a Wi-Fi phone that whisks voice calls along wireless Internet networks, and a new cordless phone with built-in VoIP adapter.

VoIP Carries The Sound Of Savings For Some Already With Net Service

January 2, 2005

By Tom McGhee

Kevin Stone doesn't care about the high-tech features that help set Internet telephones apart from the land-line phone on which he once relied.

The appeal of the service, called Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP, is price, said the 32- year-old Denver real estate agent.

"It's just cheaper."

Stone got a VoIP phone in September after moving to Denver from California.

There, he paid about $35 a month for a land-line service with voice mail and call waiting. On top of that, he had to pay a separate long-distance bill.

Today, he pays VoIP provider Vonage Holdings $14.99 a month for 500 minutes of service, including long-distance calls. Voice mail and call waiting - which cost extra on traditional telephone plans - are part of the package.

Minnesota Can't Regulate Calls

January 2, 2005

By Staff

Minnesota can't regulate calls through cyberspace as it does calls through traditional phone lines, a federal appeals court ruled. The Dec. 22 order upholds a lower-court ruling and is a triumph for fledgling companies like Vonage Holdings Corp. of Edison, N.J., which provides Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. The loser in the ruling by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. The PUC had argued that VoIP companies were providing phonelike service and therefore should be regulated as phone companies. But those businesses said they provide an information service rather than a telecommunications service.

Recent Stock Growth May Make It Appear That The Telecom Sector Has Regained Its Health, But Such A Diagnosis Relies On Many Unknowns

January 2, 2005

When Sprint Corp. announced its $35 billion merger with Nextel Communications last month, Dave Anderson's phone started ringing.

“I must have had 20 calls when they announced the merger,” said Anderson, chief investment officer at Gold Trust Co. in Overland Park and manager of the Gold Bank Equity Fund.

People wanted to know, “Should I buy or sell?”

But in the bedraggled telecom sector, there are no easy answers.

Court: Minn. Can't Regulate Internet Calls

January 1, 2005

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A Minnesota agency may not regulate calls through cyberspace as it does calls through traditional phone lines, a federal appeals court ruled.

The Dec. 22 order by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis upholds a lower-court ruling and is a win for fledgling companies like Vonage Holdings Corp. of Edison, N.J., which provides Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission had argued that VoIP companies were providing phone-like service and therefore should be regulated as phone companies are. But those businesses said they provide an information service rather than a telecommunications service.

Startups Collect About $20 Billion In 2004

January 1, 2005

By Todd Wallack

Investors are slowly starting to bet more money on startups.

Venture capitalists poured roughly $20 billion into fledgling companies around the country last year, up 7 percent from 2003 and the first time venture investment has risen since the tech bubble burst in 2000, according to preliminary figures from PricewaterhouseCoopers' MoneyTree Survey.

In 2003, young private companies raised $18.7 billion in venture money. The accounting firm called the $1.3 billion increase a slight uptick.

Soldiers Take Advantage Of Free Phone Service From Vonage

December 29, 2004

By Staff

More than 200,000 phone calls were made in 2004 by U.S. soldiers in Iraq to loved ones back home, thanks to the free phone service provided by Vonage Holdings Corp., a provider of broadband phone service.

Vonage plans to continue this program throughout 2005.

"Vonage has noticed an increase in calls during the holiday season and is glad we have been able to give our troops the ability to call their families to say happy holidays and tell them how much they are missed and wish them a great New Year," stated Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage Holdings Corp.

Mergers, Dot-Com Resurgence Marked 2004

January 3, 2005

By Staff

2004 brought a new sense of optimism to the tech industry — even the beleaguered dot-com field.

Google's (GOOG) initial public offering got investors excited about the Internet again. And with another record holiday season, eBay (EBAY) and other e-commerce sites proved there was plenty of money to be made online.

Still, the tech industry remained cautious. Many firms continued to slash jobs and cut costs. And consolidation was the order of the day.

Two pairs of cell phone service providers agreed to merge.
