Vonage Launches VoIP In The UK

January 7, 2005

By Staff

US broadband phone services provider Vonage has launched in the United Kingdom, having met with considerable success in North America.

Vonage offers consumers and small businesses an alternative to traditional telephone services by using voice over internet protocol (VoIP) to make phone calls using a standard telephone, rather than a headset plugged into a PC.

VoIP Specialists Upbeat Despite Cable Competition

January 7, 2005

By Julian Watson

In 2005 VoIP specialists such as Vonage, BroadVoice and VoicePulse will face intensifying competition from cable operators and Baby Bells, which are launching or extending consumer VoIP offerings (see United States: 17 November 2004: SBC to Launch Consumer VoIP in Early 2005 and United States: 27 May 2004: Comcast Announces Widescale VoIP Deployment). However, speaking at the Pulver.com summit at the Consumer Electronics Show, the VoIP specialists were upbeat about their ability to compete as cable operators seek to upgrade existing customers to VoIP and Baby Bells embark on a client retention drive.

US Internet Phone Group Vonage Steps Into Britain

January 10, 2005

By Staff

LONDON (Reuters) - Vonage, the U.S.-based Internet-based phone group, has quietly opened shop in Britain with its first European cut-price offer for unlimited local and national calls.

Vonage said on its www.vonage.co.uk Web Site it was offering residential customers unlimited calls in the UK and Ireland, low international rates and voicemail for 9.99 pounds ($18.74) per month. Small businesses pay 18.99 pounds, including a fax line.

Vonage belongs to a new breed of groups using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which is threatening to revolutionise the market by offering cut-price -- or sometimes free -- telephone calls using high-speed Internet connections.

Vonage @ CES - Hands-On With The UTStarcom F-1000, Vonage’s WiFi Phone

January 9, 2005

By Peter Rojas

That videophone was nice, but the real reason we stopped by Vonage’s booth at CES was to get hands-on with the UTStarcom F-1000, their first WiFi phone which is due out in a few months. We were able to glean a few details about the F-1000 (which has the not-quite-yet-retro look of a mid-Nineties cellphone), ...

Industry Analysis: VoIP Here To Stay

January 7, 2005

By Theodore F. di Stefano

The future of VoIP is, to a significant extent, now! What we are witnessing is a virtual revolution in communications technology. In the not-to-distant future, you will, in my opinion, be able to call anyone on the planet at basically local-calling rates.

Not too many years ago, the acronym VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) was virtually unheard of. Today, it is becoming an everyday term. In fact, the major phone companies ignore this technology at their peril.

A while back, I remember trying to set up my computer to receive and send phone calls via VoIP. I quickly learned the meaning of full-duplex and half-duplex -- full duplex referring to the transmission of data in two directions, half-duplex in one direction.

Minnnesota To Appeal FCC Vonage Ruling

January 7, 2005

By Staff

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) plans to appeal a November decision by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prohibiting states from regulating VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) services, such as those offered by Vonage Holdings.

The appeal of the FCC’s ruling would be the second appeal by a state public utilities commission after California filed a petition for review with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in December. The Minnesota appeal, to be filed with the Eighth Circuit appeals court, may be filed by the end of the week, said Burl Haar, executive secretary of the Minnesota PUC. The commission directed its lawyers to begin the appeals process earlier this week.

Voice Over IP Comes To Landline Phones In The UK

January 6, 2005

By Stuart Miles

Broadband phone services firm Vonage has quietly launched a Voice over IP service in the UK that can run directly through a users landline phone handset.

The system works by providing a convenient phone adapter/router which converts analogue signals to digital signals which plugs into a broadband connection. A standard telephone can then be plugged into the adapter so that when a call is made or received the signal is converted to digital and routed through a high-speed DSL or cable modem across the Internet and back through a traditional phone network to the receiver’s phone – providing low cost and high quality phone calls anywhere in the world.

UK To Get Broadband VoIP - Over Wi-Fi

January 7, 2005

By Peter Judge

VoIP service provider Vonage has launched in the UK. The initial consumer voice-over-broadband service will be followed in Spring or Summer, with a Wi-Fi phone that can be used at public hotspots on the same account, and an SME offering that handles up to 50 lines through normal PBX equipment.

Vonage subscribers pay £9.99 per month for unlimited local and national calls, with low international call rates. The user plugs a conventional telephone into an adapter (which Vonage provides) that routes the call onto the user's ISP connection, so both incoming and outgoing calls go over the Internet. For £18.99, a small business package includes a separate dedicated fax number.

Minnesota To Appeal FCC Vonage Ruling
