Vonage Targets BT's Customers With UK Marketing Campaign

January 13, 2005

By Staff

Vonage, the leading US Internet telephony firm, is aiming to win a share of BT's huge customer base with the launch of a multi-million-pound UK marketing drive within the next two weeks.

The company is aiming to more than double its subscriber base by the end of 2005, helped by its UK service which soft-launched last week. CEO Jeffrey Citron said it was aiming for 1m users worldwide by the end of the year, up from 400,000 now.

Citron said Vonage would be competing against BT rather than other Internet telephony firms. "Our only rival is the incumbent operator - it's the one with the customers," he said.

US Provider Slips Quietly Into The UK VoIP Sector

January 13, 2005

By Julian Watson

On 6 January, US service provider Vonage officially started offering voice-over-IP (VoIP) in the UK. But in contrast to the hype surrounding the technology and the company, this was an unassuming launch.

At present, residents and small businesses can only sign up to the service - prices for which start at £9.99 a month - through the Vonage Web site. They get unlimited calling to fixed-line phones in the UK and Ireland, and free benefits including Voicemail Plus, three-way calling and calls to mobiles from 5p a minute.

So why the modest introduction? Hype isn't Vonage's style. In its main two markets, the US and Canada, it waited several months after launch before embarking on a serious marketing effort. It now has more than 400,000 subscribers, having doubled its customer base in the past six months. Customers and critics of VoIP can exchange their views at vonage-forum.com. The emphasis is on engagement with users, not hype.

New Vonage VoIP Phone To Speed Voice-Over Wi-Fi To Consumer Market, Says ABI Research

January 13, 2005

By Robert Hoskins

1/13/05 - On January 4, Vonage and UTStarcom, Inc. announced a partnership to introduce a portable Wi-Fi handset, the F-1000, configured with Vonage's Voice over IP (VoIP) phone service. This product, which will offer mobility across 802.11b networks, will be available to Vonage subscribers in the U.S. during the spring/summer 2005. Meanwhile, the new service is being trialed internally.

While this is not the first foray into providing cellular phone services over Wi-Fi -- Net2Phone has been conducting a trial in Newark, New Jersey -- Vonage's extensive reach, via hotspot aggregator Boingo Wireless's 12,000+ locations in 48 U.S. states and 32 countries, means that F-1000 purchasers will enjoy a practical alternative to traditional cellular communications.

Vonage Handsets To Change Mobile Telephony

Handsets On The Bleedin’ Edge

January 12, 2005

By Staff

Recent mobile handset developments from Vonage and Samsung highlight the changing shape of mobile telephony.

At the recent CES show in Las Vegas, Vonage announced a partnership with UTStarcom, Inc., to introduce a portable Wi-Fi handset, the F-1000, configured with Vonage’s Voice over IP (VoIP) phone service. This product, which will offer mobility across 802.11b networks, will be available nationwide to Vonage subscribers during the spring/summer 2005.

According to Philip Solis, senior analyst, wireless connectivity at ABI Research, many consumers will use the new phone as a cordless phone replacement on their home or business Wi-Fi networks. Some might not want to carry the extra VoIP handset in addition to their standard mobile phone when traveling. But the service could be of value to anyone wishing to make a large number of calls from public hotspots. “This development is significant," says Solis, “because of the size of Vonage’s customer base — 400,000 — compared to other VoIP providers.

UK - Voice Over IP Comes To Landline Phones In The UK

January 11, 2005

By Staff

Broadband phone services firm Vonage has launched a VoIP service in the UK that can run directly through a users landline phone handset.

The system works by providing a convenient phone adapter/router, which converts analogue signals to digital signals that plugs into a broadband connection. A standard telephone can then be plugged into the adapter so that when a call is made or received the signal is converted to digital and routed through a high-speed DSL or cable modem across the Internet and back through a traditional phone network to the receiver's phone.

What's Ahead For Vonage In 2005?

January 10, 2005

By Toni Kistner

Cisco/Linksys touts residential IP telephony as the next big thing. A slew of broadband providers from AT&T to Cablevision jump on board to offer flat-rate phone services with compelling new features. What's it all mean for the upstart that started it all, Vonage Holdings? Network World's Net.Worker Managing Editor Toni Kistner discusses the company's plans for the new year with Vonage Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Citron.

Vonage partnered with Viseon in an exclusive deal to offer broadband videophone service. How will Vonage succeed with a product that's never taken off?

We're working with Viseon to solve the problems that have plagued videophones historically. One big concern has been pricing. Videophones have been terribly expensive, not really approachable below $500. The other problem is quality. There just hasn't been enough bandwidth. But conditions in the home have changed. Higher bandwidth is becoming more readily available, compression technologies more advanced. The quality of the phones is now very good, and finally we think we can bring down the price and make it affordable.

How will you bring down the price?

Turning Wi-Fi Into A Must-Have

January 11, 2005

By Kharif

As new applications and devices proliferate, wireless broadband will become a necessity for businesses and ordinary folks alike.

Not so long ago, nurses at the surgical unit of Rhode Island Hospital ran marathons on their daily shifts. If one of them needed help to administer a treatment, he or she would have to leave a patient's bedside and trek through the corridors to look for a colleague who could lend a hand.

Three months ago the hospital, which is part of medical group Lifespan, provided surgical-unit nurses with special wireless phones from a Cupertino (Calif.) startup called Vocera. The devices allow them to call fellow staffers via an in-building Wi-Fi network, covering more than 1 million square feet. Now a nurse can simply punch in another nurse's phone number from the patient's bedside, and help is on its way. As a result, their feet -– and nerves -- get less of a workout.

Comcast Expands Web Phone

January 11, 2005

By Tom Johnson

Comcast said yesterday it will offer Internet phone service to all 40 million homes in its coverage area within 18 months, an aggressive strategy that ramps up competition with traditional phone carriers.

The nation's largest cable operator said that by the end of this year, the same lines that now provide television programming and high-speed Internet connections would also be able to carry telephone service to 20 million homes, or about half its service area. The remaining customers would be able to order Internet phone service through Comcast by 2006.

Comcast joins a growing list of cable operators, start-up ventures and traditional phone companies such as AT&T that have jumped into the rapidly growing market for Internet-based telephone service.

The New Internet; After Years Of Little Change, The Internet Is Going Through A Revitalization, Once Again Offering Innovation And Competition

January 8, 2005

By Cade Metz

First came the Boom. Then came the Bust. And when the dust cleared, the Internet found itself in a bit of a rut. In the nineties, as countless users logged on to the Internet for the first time, we learned that it was a place marked by unfettered innovation. We were spoiled by a seemingly infinite number of dot-coms ready to introduce new products and new ideas that would make the Internet even better. But then the wheels of change came to a halt, and we spent the beginning of the 21st century working with limited choices.

Most of us surfed with Internet Explorer, searched with Google, chatted with AIM, and shared files with Kazaa. We waited in vain for something new and different. But the Next Big Thing never arrived.

WLAN Chips Empower Wi-Fi

January 10, 2005

By Carmen Nobel

Texas Instruments Inc. is rolling out a family of wireless LAN processors designed for hardware manufacturers planning to bring Wi-Fi beyond laptop computers and access points.

The TNETW1350 is a single-chip MAC (media access control) base-band processor that provides power conversion on the chip without external filters. The combination will reduce component count and materials by 50 percent compared with previous versions of TI's Wi-Fi silicon, said officials at TI, in Dallas.

The 1350 will work in conjunction with two new 802.11b/g radios, which TI unveiled last week. The TNETW3422/26, designed with low power consumption in mind, is meant to be embedded in mobile devices such as digital cameras. The TNETW3422/28, designed for residential gateways, extends the range of previous TI radios by up to two times, officials said.
