Broadband Telephony Gets A Boost

May 20, 2005

By Jane Wakefield

The US company is to sell its kit, which allows people to make web calls on their existing home phone, in branches of Staples.

The kit consists of a broadband router which is plugged into a broadband connection and home phone.

Vonage is hoping the fact it works via a phone rather than a computer will make it appeal to a wider audience.

Customers pay a £9.99 monthly fee which will entitle them to unlimited local and national calls. Vonage-to-Vonage calls are free and there are cheap rates for mobile and international calls.

Consumer confusion

Web-phoning technology, known as voice-over IP (voIP) , converts phone conversations into packets of data to be transmitted down the same wires used to browse the net.

It is becoming more popular and getting a higher profile as internet service providers and firms such as Skype attract customers to this lucrative new area for broadband users.

The way we make telephone calls is due to change .

According to the International Data Group, up to 11% of UK broadband users will have a voIP service by 2007.

Vonage Wi-Fi Phone In Action

May 19, 2005

By Staff

While the company may not be exhibiting at E3 2005, Vonage met with us to give a short hands-on demonstration of its upcoming Wi-Fi phone. The phone uses a form factor similar to a standard cell phone, but connects to 802.11b Wi-Fi networks. Once connected to the Internet, the phone utilizes Vonage's voice over IP infrastructure to make calls. In tests by BetaNews, the phone performed admirably and automatically acquired network access without a hitch.

Vonage's Wi-Fi phone is currently in beta testing and is slated to launch by the end of the year. Pricing will be around $100 USD, and the phone will be sold via Vonage's Web site.

FCC Orders VoIP Firms To Provide 911 Service

May 19, 2005

By Drew Clark

All Internet phone services that connect to traditional telephones will be required to provide 911 emergency service to customers within 120 days under an FCC order announced Thursday.

The unanimous action, the first significant agency decision since Kevin Martin became FCC chairman in March, sets the stage for an expensive and controversial scramble by voice-over-Internet protocol -- VoIP -- companies to retrofit their technologies to meet the mandate.

"Today's action seeks to remedy a very serious problem -- one quite literally of life or death for the millions of customers that subscribe to VoIP services as a substitute for traditional phone service," Martin said.

The issue of whether or how to regulate Internet-based communications -- including Internet telephone service -- has been hotly debated at the FCC for more than a year.

Until Thursday's action, VoIP providers -- including industry leader Vonage -- generally enjoyed minimal or no regulation.

Vonage Brings 'Mass Market' VoIP To The UK

May 19, 2005

By Sylvia Carr

Vonage has officially launched its voice over IP (VoIP) phone service in the UK after completing a 'soft launch' period which started in January.

Kerry Ritz, managing director of Vonage UK, told silicon.com the company used the last five months to make sure the service was working properly and train the New Jersey-based customer service staff on British "peculiarities - things like post codes, UK phone number conventions and how to spell Welsh names".

The customer service staff will remain in New Jersey for the time being, said Ritz, though there is a chance of adding local support as the company's UK and European businesses grow.

Vonage offers a flat-rate residential phone service - £9.99 per month for unlimited local and national calls, low international rates and features such as caller ID and voicemail - as well as an £18.99 small business offering that also includes a fax line.

FCC Orders RBOC's To Open 911 Access For VoIP Providers

FCC Mandates 911 VoIP Service

May 19, 2005

By Roy Mark

UPDATED: WASHINGTON -- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) unanimously voted today to require Internet telephone companies to provide emergency 911 service to all their customers.

The FCC also ordered incumbent carriers to provide access to their 911 networks to Internet telephone companies, including access to trunk lines, selective routers and 911 databases.

The order does not specify how the Voice over IP (define) firms will interconnect with the incumbent carriers or what the rates will be.

"By not dictating the technical means by which providers must come into compliance, we do not impose undue regulation on these services," new FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said.

With the emergence of commercially viable Internet telephone service over the last two years, companies such as Vonage have come under fire for not providing the same type of 911 service as traditional landlines and cellular carriers.

Vonage® Agrees With SBC And Bellsouth To Purchase Nomadic VoIP E9-1-1 Service

Vonage Press Releases

Three of the Four Baby Bells Now Offer Nomadic 9-1-1 Capabilities to VoIP Companies To Deploy NENA’s Proposed I2 Technical Standard

Edison, NJ, May 19, 2005 – Vonage, the leading provider of broadband phone service, today announced they have agreed to purchase access to elements of the wireless and wireline Enhanced 9-1-1 network to offer its customers E9-1-1 service from SBC and BellSouth. As a result of successful negotiations, ongoing since April, between the companies, Vonage will able to deliver both caller’s location and call back number to emergency services personnel for 9-1-1 calls placed throughout three of the four major RBOC territories before the end of the year. The ongoing negotiations with SBC and BellSouth have followed the spirit of the FCC’s goal to forge commercial agreements, outside of a regulatory mandate, to bridge the VoIP-E9-1-1 gap as quickly as possible. This is the first time the ILECs have worked closely with any nomadic VoIP service to ensure emergency calling keeps pace with VoIP technology.

“SBC and BellSouth have really come a long way over just a few short weeks – we now have a good faith agreement to get this done in the marketplace so all of our customers can get E9-1-1, regardless of what number they’re calling from and where. As good corporate citizens and stewards of the E9-1-1 public trust, SBC and BellSouth have agreed to implement an E9-1-1 solution that will serve all customers including those who are mobile and those users on non-local phone numbers,” said Jeffrey A. Citron, Vonage’s CEO. “Fortunately, we have all settled, in principle, to unbundle wireless E9-1-1 elements so VoIP providers like us can implement NENA’s new I2 standard, instead of being restricted to a CLEC for call delivery.”

Providing the means by which broadband phone companies like Vonage can offer E9-1-1 is a major accomplishment and Vonage commends Mr. Whitacre and Mr. Ackerman for their commitment to this project. Three of the four Baby Bells have shown great leadership by working with new technologies to ensure that Internet-based communications services can interoperate with Public Safety Answering Points. Before the end of the year, Vonage will offer a true E9-1-1 solution on par with traditional telephone service, to the majority of its customers, regardless of the phone number they’ve chosen to use.
