Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 30, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Although this week started with a flurry of news, the fact that we are headed for a four-day Fourth of July weekend in the U.S. (and Canada Day, for you Canadians) means that the flow of Vonage-related news is starting to slow down. That doesn't mean we here at the Vonage VoIP Forum get to put on our beach flip-flops yet. In today's issue, we'll point you to a new book by one of our favorite VoIP bloggers, We saw lots of you on the Forum Wednesday, starting and participating in some very popular new posts about configuring Vonage to work with the Dish Network and it's Digital Video Recorder capability; asking about "broadband boosters," and seeking advice on how to fix a fast broadband connection that all of a sudden, isn't so fast, or so "broad."

Arm Wrestling With the Giant Telcos in the CEO's Chair: Jeffrey Citron of Vonage

June 29, 2005

By Ben Hunt

It may have looked easy for Vonage, the broadband phone company that has been tearing up the rules of the US telecommunications market over the past couple of years, but Jeffrey Citron, its impossibly young looking chief executive, insists it was not.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 29, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's issue, we'll look at how Vonage is handling 911 calls until a permanent solution is reached in time for the Federal Communications Commission's deadline to do so. Speaking of rulings, we'll read what Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron thinks about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that cable television broadband Internet service providers do not have to open up their networks to competitors. We'll review an article that describes a new way that you can use your Vonage connection over cordless phones. A blog item that suggests companies like Vonage offered pre-paid VoIP minutes gets our look-see. We'll also tell you about an article in which a traveling consultant was able to use his Vonage service from a most unlikely location. Finally, we'll look at a popular new Vonage VoIP Forum thread on how some of you are planning to use your Vonage from the road over the forthcoming Fourth of July weekend.

Traveling With Vonage: US Reporter Enjoys Local Dial Tone In Cairo

Vonage In Print News

Web Phones Hit The Road

June 28, 2005

By Larry Magid

CAIRO, EGYPT - I'm more than 7,000 miles from home but when I called my wife from my hotel I didn't have to dial an area code and the hour-long call didn't cost a penny. Instead of paying more than $1 a minute to call long distance or $2.50 a minute to use my cell phone, I placed the call via the Internet. And, thanks to Vonage, neither Patti nor I had to sit in front of a computer to talk on the phone.

What's more, the service doesn't just let you make outside calls. You can receive calls as well. After Patti and I spoke, the phone in my hotel room rang with a call from a friend of mine who didn't even know I was out of the country. He called my regular home/office line, which rang here in Cairo.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 28, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

There's a lot of news of interest to Vonage users. In today's issue, we'll look at a key state where Vonage is launching service in several markets. We'll surprise you with some news about where you are going to see Vonage ads this summer. One prominent technology columnist has some upbeat things to say about his Vonage bill, compared to bills from other telephony service providers. And speaking of the telephony world, we'll look at whether or not Vonage will be affected by today's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said cable television companies that provide high-speed Internet service do not have to open their transmission lines to competitors. Finally, we'll look at a popular new Vonage VoIP Forum thread on Multiple router setup's.

Advertisers Pour More Money Into the Big Screen

June 27, 2005

By Jane L. Levere

Vonage plans to use this character in
an animated spot in movie theaters.

HATE being stuck in a movie theater with no choice but to watch advertisements on the big screen?

Get used to it.

Advertisers like these spots, and have been buying more of them. Movie ads are one more alternative to television spots, which are losing favor as TiVo and other digital video recorders make it easier for viewers to zap them.

The World of Business Just Got Smaller

June 27, 2005

By David Grossman

Did you ever tally up your expenses after a trip and get that sick feeling when you realize your telephone calls cost more than your hotel room? I was very disappointed recently to learn my cell phone would not work in Asia. I received more bad news when my calling card provider told me it would cost me $2.30 a minute to call the U.S. from Asia. Even after scouting out a variety of calling card options, the lowest rates I could find would still be $.35 a minute, or $21 an hour. That's a lot of Yen, Won and Bhat.
