Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 8, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll learn about a new partnership between Vonage and a voice-and video chat company with more than 3.5 million members. In the wake of yesterday's terrible terrorist bombings in London, we'll look at news reports about how Vonage did as a communications provider between morning commuters and loved ones concerned for that fate. We'll review what Vonage members on our Vonage UK Forum said about how they used the service to communicate with loved ones. Finally, we'll review a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread that discusses and issues related to the placement of your existing telephones when you switch from your old phone company to Vonage.

Vonage Apparently is Staffing Up for Australia Service

July 7, 2005

By Russell Shaw

Yahoo! Finance Australia links to a Dow Jones wire service story that says Vonage is preparing to launch its service in that nation.

The time-line given is within several months.

Although Vonage is not commenting, the article mentions that Vonage has hired an executive search firm to locate finance, marketing, and executive level talent to run the operation.

Retail VoIP Use Doubles

July 7, 2005

By Staff

The number of consumers using retail voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services has more than doubled during the past nine months, according to new estimates by U.K. research house Point Topic, which estimates that more than 11 million people in the world were using retail VoIP for at least some of their calls by the end of March. The total soars even higher – to almost 17.5 million – when consumers using such soft clients as Skype and VoiceGlo are included in the total, Point Topic adds.

The largest retail VoIP market still is in Japan, where Yahoo! Japan by itself accounts for 4.5 million subscribers. The United States comes in at Number Two, with about 2.1 million subscribers, but Point Topic Senior Analyst John Bosnell now predicts fast growth as ILECs like Verizon, SBC and Qwest come to market. Those moves, Point Topic notes, are in direct response to Vonage's “poaching” customers. Vonage's total subscriber numbers were up by 38 percent in the first three months of 2005, the research house says.

The Growth of Voice-over Internet Protocol

July 7, 2005

By Staff

Point Topic estimates that over 11 million people were using a retail voice over IP (VoIP) service for at least some of their telephone calls at the end of March 2005. That’s an increase from just over 5 million at mid-2004 according to Point Topic research published in December 2004 and the Point Topic VoIP Application Source profiles in Broadband Money Makers.

This number is based on a total of publicly available figures for VoIP subscribers, combined with estimates where subscriber numbers were not available. Many of these estimates are based on a conservative 10% growth from Q4 2004 to Q1 2005. The total does not include PC-based ‘soft-client’ services like Skype and VoiceGlo.

Huge Growth Seen In Retail VoIP

July 6, 2005

By John Walko

LONDON — More than 11 million people worldwide were using a retail voice over IP (VoIP) service for at least some of their telephone calls at the end of March 2005, according to market research group Point Topic.

The number climbs to just under 17.5 million users when 'soft-clients' like Skype and VoiceGlo are added in, according to John Bosnell, senior analyst at Point Topic.

"Japan is still the largest market by some way, [as} Yahoo Japan alone has more than 4.5 million VoIP subscribers," said Bosnell.

Vonage Cut-Price Call Threat To Telstra

July 6, 2005

By Paul Godby

SYDNEY (Dow Jones)--U.S. Internet telephone company Vonage plans to launch its cut-price call technology in Australia, delivering Telstra (TLS) a new competitive threat as it prepares for its full privatization, The Australian Financial Review reports Thursday.

Vonage has won more than 500,000 customers in the U.S. by undercutting giants such as AT&T Corp. (T) and aims to do the same thing in Australia. Vonage has hired an executive search firm to assemble a group of operations, finance and marketing executives to launch the company in Australia in the coming months, the newspaper says, without citing any sources.

Analysts: VoIP Users Are 17 Million Strong And Growing

Vonage In Print News

More Than 17 Million VoIP Users

July 6, 2005

By Wolfgang Gruener

Chicago (IL) - Voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephone services are reaching beyond early adopters: According to a report released on Wednesday, more than 17 million people around the world already use VoIP. Skype is the market leader with an estimated 5.3 million users.

Analysts had expected VoIP to change its face as a geeky application to a mainstream application sometime this year. A new report released by Point-Topic is yet another indication that Internet-based phone services are quickly gaining traction: According to the market research firm, the global subscriber base of retail VoIP services more than doubled within the past nine months. About five million consumers used such a service in mid-2004; at the end of March this number was estimated to be 11.5 million. Counting in soft phone services such as Skype, the current total comes to about 17.4 million, Point-Topic said.

Vonage Getting Into Local Market

July 3, 2005

By Staff

Vonage has been around for a while, technically speaking.

"We needed to get access to local phone numbers to market it," company spokeswoman Brooke Schulz said last week. "We probably have Vonage customers in Springfield now. They're just not using the 217 area code."

Previously, customers were assigned Vonage area codes and numbers. VoIP provides local and long-distance phone service through high-speed cable and DSL connections.

Vonage isn't likely to drive SBC and Verizon from the market just yet. The company has about 700,000 customers nationwide but is adding new subscribers at a rate of 15,000 a week, according to the Web site, www.vonage.com.
