Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

July 13, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today is one heck of a busy news day. We'll look at the results of a major, conclusive study that compared the technical quality of Vonage calls with those of competitors. In the light of another Internet phone service provider's announcement about a new initiative to enable Internet calling over Wi-Fi, we'll look at a similar solution already available to Vonage subscribers. We'll take a look at how many people saw Internet-based Vonage ads last week, and pay a visit to a successful investor and new Vonage subscriber who prefers to call customers over his Vonage line rather than over his cell phone. We'll also review new Vonage VoIP Forum threads on testing E911 service, using your Vonage line in conjunction with your DirecTV service, and a thread where a new Vonage user found out the maximum time allotted for each Vonage voice mail message.

VoIP E911 Goes Live in New York City

July 8, 2005

By Heather Forsgren Weaver

WASHINGTON - As the telecommunications industry and public safety met Thursday to discuss how to implement a Nov. 28 deadline for Voice over Internet Protocol providers to offer enhanced 911 to their customers, VoIP users were able to access 911 in New York City.

"The deployment of the VoIP E911 solution in New York City represents a significant milestone in the evolution of 911, providing VoIP subscribers in New York City with the same level of emergency response as traditional wireline service," said Stephen Meer, co-founder and chief technology officer of Intrado Inc., one of the parties involved in the New York City deployment.

Verizon Communications Inc. and Vonage Holdings Corp. were also involved in getting VoIP E911 in New York City up and running.

 Vonage Reportedly Eyeing Australia

Vonage Eyes Australia, Courts Web Chatters

July 7, 2005

By Staff

Reports from down under suggest Vonage is preparing a launch in Australia, which would become the fourth country in which it is active (following the United States, Canada and the U.K.). Meanwhile, Vonage inked a pact with chat-room specialist Paltalk, under which its VoIP service will be offered to those of the roughly 3.5 million Paltalk users who live in the countries served by Vonage.

The indications that Vonage is looking at Australia came in a report in the Australian Financial Review that Vonage hired executive search firm Shakers Recruitment to help it hire “a group of operations, finance and marketing executives to launch the company in Australia in the coming months.” Vonage hasn’t commented publicly on the report or discussed its Australian plans.

CompTel Urges FCC For Stronger VoIP Port Blocking Laws

Vonage In Print News

CompTel/ALTS Demands Stronger Port-Blocking Action

July 7, 2005

By Staff

The CompTel/ALTS trade group, representing competitive communications service providers, has urged the FCC to take a stronger, formal stand and a clearer position prohibiting incumbent network owners from blocking rival VoIP offerings and other emerging services. In a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin on so-called "port blocking," the group recommended that the federal regulators "act swiftly and decisively to preserve unfettered consumer access to innovative Internet technologies."

CompTel/ALTS says its FCC move was drafted partly in reaction to last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision on the Brand X Internet Services case, which upheld the commission's classifying cable-TV communications offerings as lightly regulated information services, thus exacerbating network-access concerns (TelecomWeb, June 28). At the same time, the group echoes warnings about port-blocking that were highlighted in March by a discretionary FCC consent-decree enforcement action against incumbent telco Madison River Communications LLC for alleged port-blocking of Vonage Holdings VoIP-oriented packet traffic.

VoIP Use On the Up-and-Up

July 8, 2005

By Tim Richardson

The use of internet telephony has doubled over the last year according to analysts at Point Topic.

Its research found that more than 11 million people around the world use a retail voice over IP (VoIP) service compared to five million a year ago. The numbers exclude PC-based "soft-client" services such as Skype.

With 7.2m regular users, Japan leads the VoIP pop charts followed by the US with 2.1m users. In Europe, France is the largest market for VoIP with 1.2m subscribers.

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll learn about a new partnership between Vonage and a voice-and video chat company with more than 3.5 million members. In the wake of yesterday's terrible terrorist bombings in London, we'll look at news reports about how Vonage did as a communications provider between morning commuters and loved ones concerned for that fate. We'll review what Vonage members on our Vonage UK Forum said about how they used the service to communicate with loved ones. Finally, we'll review a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread that discusses and issues related to the placement of your existing telephones when you switch from your old phone company to Vonage.

Vonage Apparently is Staffing Up for Australia Service

July 7, 2005

By Russell Shaw

Yahoo! Finance Australia links to a Dow Jones wire service story that says Vonage is preparing to launch its service in that nation.

The time-line given is within several months.

Although Vonage is not commenting, the article mentions that Vonage has hired an executive search firm to locate finance, marketing, and executive level talent to run the operation.

Retail VoIP Use Doubles

July 7, 2005

By Staff

The number of consumers using retail voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services has more than doubled during the past nine months, according to new estimates by U.K. research house Point Topic, which estimates that more than 11 million people in the world were using retail VoIP for at least some of their calls by the end of March. The total soars even higher – to almost 17.5 million – when consumers using such soft clients as Skype and VoiceGlo are included in the total, Point Topic adds.

The largest retail VoIP market still is in Japan, where Yahoo! Japan by itself accounts for 4.5 million subscribers. The United States comes in at Number Two, with about 2.1 million subscribers, but Point Topic Senior Analyst John Bosnell now predicts fast growth as ILECs like Verizon, SBC and Qwest come to market. Those moves, Point Topic notes, are in direct response to Vonage's “poaching” customers. Vonage's total subscriber numbers were up by 38 percent in the first three months of 2005, the research house says.
