VoIP Handset Market Set to Take Off

July 22, 2005

By Sean Michael Kerner

The global Wi-Fi VoIP handset market is set to take off according to a new study released this week from Infonetics Research. The study hits the street at the same time as Vonage and VTech officially launch a 5.8GHz wireless VoIP system, with a Vonage Wi-Fi phone expected sometime this fall.

According to Infonetics Research's report, WiFi Phones Biannual Worldwide Market Size and Forecast, 143,000 Wi-Fi VoIP handsets were sold in 2004 adding up to $54.7 million in revenue. Of that total $6.7 million in revenue was from dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellular handset sales.

Vonage, VTech Team For Cordless VOIP Phone

July 22, 2005

By Staff

Vonage and VTech said this week that they have teamed up to take the VOIP service cordless with an integrated system.

Although normal corded and cordless phones can be plugged into a Vonage-enabled router to allow VOIP service, the new IP-8100-2 phone from VTech will integrate the Vonage service directly into the phone. The phone will cost $149.99, not including a $50 rebate that can be mailed in after 60 days of the Vonage service.

Vonage Finally Goes Wireless

July 20, 2005

By Staff

In just four days, Vonage will begin selling wireless phones for use with its service – albeit months later than expected – with hardware from only one of its three anticipated vendors ready to roll and not even the promised WiFi-based hardware at that. The VoIP carrier says a 5.8 GHz phone from VTech will be on the shelves at more than 8,000 retailers, and Vonage is touting the widgetry as “the world’s first broadband enabled cordless phone system.”

We'll kick off our Friday "In The Blogs" feature by telling you what some bloggers we read regularly (and a few we read less regularly) have been writing about Vonage this week. We'll also look at an older Vonage VoIP Forum thread with some new posts about getting Vonage to work with XBox Live, and a new thread about - get this- why your Mom's voice may be causing your Vonage connection to think your Mom's voice is a touch-tone sound.
