We Need A Broadband Bill Of Rights

August 22, 2005

By Preston Gralla

The news that a service provider was forcing its broadband customers to pay a premium to use VoIP from Vonage shows that it's time for a "broadband bill of rights."

The idea for a broadband bill of rights was suggested by Vonage's CEO Jeffrey Citron. The idea is that there are certain rights you have as a broadband consumer, for example, that your service provider can't block you from using a VoIP service from a competitor.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 23, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll learn about an attempt on the part of one broadband Internet Service Provider to charge Vonage subscribers extra to use the service. We'll read what one E911 industry insider has to say about the challenges that traditional phone companies are facing in modifying their systems to allow Vonage users access to E911 services in their calling areas. We'll hear about a new Internet phone service from Google and whether or not it will compete with Vonage. We'll also look at new Vonage VoIP Forum threads about  how to set up Vonage service in a home with those old four-prong phone plugs in the wall, and how to arrange for a MAC address swap.

99 Percent of Libraries Offer Free Internet

Vonage In Print News

99% of Libraries Offer Free Internet

Free high-speed Internet connections are available in almost 99 percent of U.S. public libraries, including most in high-poverty urban areas, according to a study conducted by Florida State University researchers and funded by the American Library Association and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The findings, released in June, dent claims that substantial portions of urban populations have no access to inexpensive broadband. Many advocacy groups, including the Consumer Federation of America and Free Press, have urged local governments to embark on large-scale, long-term, taxpayer-funded programs to blanket entire cities with wireless broadband systems. Philadelphia, for example, has taken bids on a system projected to cost between $15 million and $20 million. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has spoken in support of a city-operated system that would offer free wireless for low-income residents and the homeless.

Voice Over Internet Gains Ground in Granite State

Voice Over Internet Gains Ground in Granite State

August 22, 2005

By Denis Paiste

Voice over Internet Protocol has the potential to be a disruptive technology, according to James M. Prendergast, executive director of Americans for Technology Leadership, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying group.

"The idea that you can get a phone number and take your laptop and a phone that you plug into a jack and take your phone wherever it can ring, no matter where in the world you are, is an intriguing concept. I think it injects another layer of competition," he said.

Unlike a traditional phone that uses the old Bell system's lines and switches, a VoIP call travels over the Internet. Depending on the technology being used, a VoIP call can be delivered entirely through the Internet or connect at one end through a traditional land line or a cellular connection.

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll look at an article in which the head of a political group that favors very little government intervention in technology describes what he sees as the key differences between Vonage and Skype. We'll look at a review of the Vonage VTech 8100-2 cordless handset that appeared in - where? Read on and you'll find out.  We'll also spotlight a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread about a new Vonage firmware upgrade that may help those Vonage users with echo issues, and one from a Forum member whose phone light is on but whose dial tone is not. Potpourri: Good Call

September 1, 2005

By Staff

By now you’ve probably heard of voice over IP (or VOIP, a nifty phone system that routes your chatter through the Internet instead of conventional phone lines. This service works well and can save you serious dough on long distance. It’s new, though, and so far it has been a bit lack-luster in the hardware department. Finally Vonage is offering its users that most basic phone amenity: a cordless handset ($100, Vonage.com).

New Uses for Wi-Fi

September 1, 2005

By Edward Distel

The success of services like Vonage demonstrates a definite appetite for low-cost internet phone calls. The next step is taking the VoIP experience to go. UTStarcom plans to have its F1000 Wi-Fi VoIP phone (under $100), which will work with Vonage’s service, in the market by December. Besides the obvious spatial limitations of making phone calls in the 150-foot Wi-Fi coverage zone, Wi-Fi hardware requires certain quality-of-service characteristics that not every network is equipped with Battery life. IP vulnerability and data throughput are other potential obstacles. Will users be attracted to Wi-Fi only handsets, as opposed to cell phones that juggle both cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity?

Number of Internet-Phone Consumers Soars

August 17, 2005

By Brian Bergstein

The number of consumers bypassing the traditional phone network and opting for Internet voice service is soaring beyond expectations.

An analysis by the TeleGeography research group found 2.7 million subscribers nationwide in the second quarter, compared with just 440,000 a year earlier.

The technology, known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, requires a broadband Internet line but generally offers inexpensive calling plans and novel features such as the ability to manage voice mail on a Web page.
