Voice Over Internet Gains Ground in Granite State

August 22, 2005

By Denis Paiste

Voice over Internet Protocol has the potential to be a disruptive technology, according to James M. Prendergast, executive director of Americans for Technology Leadership, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying group.

"The idea that you can get a phone number and take your laptop and a phone that you plug into a jack and take your phone wherever it can ring, no matter where in the world you are, is an intriguing concept. I think it injects another layer of competition," he said.

Unlike a traditional phone that uses the old Bell system's lines and switches, a VoIP call travels over the Internet. Depending on the technology being used, a VoIP call can be delivered entirely through the Internet or connect at one end through a traditional land line or a cellular connection.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 22, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll look at an article in which the head of a political group that favors very little government intervention in technology describes what he sees as the key differences between Vonage and Skype. We'll look at a review of the Vonage VTech 8100-2 cordless handset that appeared in - where? Read on and you'll find out.  We'll also spotlight a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread about a new Vonage firmware upgrade that may help those Vonage users with echo issues, and one from a Forum member whose phone light is on but whose dial tone is not. Finally, in our regular Monday feature, we'll meet our newest Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 19, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Lots of news today.

In today's edition, we'll look at why some California Internet Service Providers are afraid some of these big phone company mergers might lead to more port-blocking of Vonage. We'll take a look at Vonage's suggestions for upgrading the E911 calling infrastructure in the U.S. We'll look at a review of the Vonage-VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone System. Today we'll see what some prominent bloggers had to say about Vonage this week. We'll also spotlight a Vonage VoIP Forum thread about a familiar topic this time of year- fried routers.

Potpourri: Good Call

September 1, 2005

By Staff

By now you’ve probably heard of voice over IP (or VOIP, a nifty phone system that routes your chatter through the Internet instead of conventional phone lines. This service works well and can save you serious dough on long distance. It’s new, though, and so far it has been a bit lack-luster in the hardware department. Finally Vonage is offering its users that most basic phone amenity: a cordless handset ($100, Vonage.com).

New Uses for Wi-Fi

September 1, 2005

By Edward Distel

The success of services like Vonage demonstrates a definite appetite for low-cost internet phone calls. The next step is taking the VoIP experience to go. UTStarcom plans to have its F1000 Wi-Fi VoIP phone (under $100), which will work with Vonage’s service, in the market by December. Besides the obvious spatial limitations of making phone calls in the 150-foot Wi-Fi coverage zone, Wi-Fi hardware requires certain quality-of-service characteristics that not every network is equipped with Battery life. IP vulnerability and data throughput are other potential obstacles. Will users be attracted to Wi-Fi only handsets, as opposed to cell phones that juggle both cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity?

Number of Internet-Phone Consumers Soars

August 17, 2005

By Brian Bergstein

The number of consumers bypassing the traditional phone network and opting for Internet voice service is soaring beyond expectations.

An analysis by the TeleGeography research group found 2.7 million subscribers nationwide in the second quarter, compared with just 440,000 a year earlier.

The technology, known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, requires a broadband Internet line but generally offers inexpensive calling plans and novel features such as the ability to manage voice mail on a Web page.

Consumer Electronics Review: VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone System

August 17, 2005

By Joal Evans

RATINGS:
Quality: 5 out of 5
Geekness: 5 out of 5

Description: VTECH Router and two cordless handsets for the Vonage VoIP system.

Highlights: No extra base for cordless phones required; router for Vonage service also powers the cordless headsets; message waiting indicator on router

Lowlights: None

Vendor/Reseller: Vonage

Price: US$149.99 (minus $50 rebate after 60 days of use)

In June of 2004 we reviewed Vonage's VoIP offering, and we liked it so much that we not only moved the Geek.com corporate line to it, but our Chief Editor also ended up using Vonage for his home line.

So, it's not surprising that we were eager to try out Vonage's new beta VTECH IP 8100-2 Broadband cordless phone system. As the name implies, it's a kit that ships with a router for connecting VoIP and two VTECH 5.8GHz cordless headsets. The headsets themselves are feature-rich and include caller ID, call waiting, hands-free speakerphone on the handset, the ability to transfer calls and conference in outside callers, intercom features between handsets, a 50-name and number phonebook directory, and more. The phone system's coolest feature is its ability to handle up to four handsets! This could totally fill just about anyone's home phone needs.

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll look at one study that shows most VoIP users are satisfied with their service and of those users, Vonage is the leading brand. We'll also see just how much the number of VoIP has grown in the U.S. We'll point you to Vonage VoIP Forum threads on how to pinpoint the cause of your radio interference, and what to do if your Vonage-compatible Linksys router is fried.

Dial 'M' for Maveric

August 11, 2005

By Ben Steelman

She has form-fitting jeans and three-toned hair, and she might pass for Jessica Simpson if you're extremely nearsighted or under the influence of a controlled substance.

If you're not nearsighted, you'll notice the metallic keypad just north of her bellybutton.

She's a telephone. You talk into her hand.
