Phone Calls For Next To Nothing

August 16, 2005

By David Frith

THE time is surely coming when we can ditch our landline telephones and slash our phone bills.

Slowly but surely the technology called voice over internet protocol is gaining popularity.

VoIP sends calls over the internet, removing most of the cost, making many calls free and cutting the cost of international calls to just a few cents.

Vonage 'Hot Line' Gives Customers Latest 911 Info

August 12, 2005

By Staff

Vonage set up a special feature to give customers more information about 911 emergency dialing. The VoIP provider told the FCC in a recent filing that customers can get updated on emergency calls by dialing "933" from a Vonage-enabled telephone.

A provider of high-speed wireless to businesses in several U.S. cities is selling Vonage's VoIP service along with its data connections.

A deal announced last week between fixed-wireless provider TowerStream and Vonage is intended to make it easier for businesses to completely bypass traditional carriers for data and phone service.

Plug your firm into internet telephony

August 14, 2005

By Matthew Wall

MANY firms have broadband networks but are still using fixed-line telephone services for voice calls. This doesn’t make sense. You can use your broadband connection for both data and voice and cut your communications bill considerably.

Internet telephony, or Voice Over Internet Protocol (Voip) in the jargon, is rapidly gaining ground. Pret A Manger, the sandwich group, says it is saving £10,000 a month after switching.

Store Combines Wireless Needs Under One Roof

August 12, 2005

By James S. Granelli

John Wiegand spent more than two hours driving to Cingular Wireless, Verizon Wireless and other brand-name stores in his search for a new mobile phone.

Not only was it a hassle, it was unproductive: He found it difficult to compare the different plans and handsets.

"Everywhere I went, each salesman would say, 'This is the best plan for you,' " the Costa Mesa, Calif., firefighter said.

Vonage, Linksys Offer $45 ATA in UK

August 12, 2005

By Staff

If Vonage’s entry into the UK market is anything to go by, there could be a bit of an adjustment to local ATA pricing.

The company has teamed up with Linksys and is is retailing the PAP2 broadband telephone adapter for just £20 (AUD$46.83 at today’s exchange rate), which is lower than US RRP.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

August 12, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we discuss why broadband ISPs don't want the U.S. government to issue rules against port blocking of services like Vonage.  We'll learn why some privacy groups are afraid that new rules to require Vonage and other VoIP providers to enable law enforcement to intercept Internet phone calls could open the door for hackers. We'll even point to a Slashdot thread about the issue. In our Friday "In The Blogs" feature, we'll look at what some of the Blogs we read regularly are saying about Vonage this week. We'll  explore a very helpful thread in which a new Vonage VoIP Forum Member seeks and gets some info about the Vonage service.
