Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 12, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.  While the calendar still says it is summer, it is starting to feel a lot like fall around here - and perhaps you are as well.

Today we will hear about how a New Orleans official in the middle of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts set up his office to communicate with Vonage- while all other forms of phone communication were knocked out. We'll read part of a new Business Week article just this morning about what at least one expert considers about Vonage going public and offering stock for sale. We'll get perspective from a key Vonage tech exec about why the company is quite excited about WiFi phones. We'll read new Vonage VoIP Forum threads on how to install the VTech IP 8100 and how to get rid of those annoying stutter tones that tell you if you have voice mail. And finally, in our regular Monday feature, we'll meet our Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the Week. You may not be surprised who it is.

City Officials Struggled To Keep Order With Crisis

September 9, 2005

By Christopher Rhoads and Peter Grant

NEW ORLEANS -- For days after Hurricane Katrina's devastating rampage through this city, a small corps of city leaders holed up at the Hyatt Hotel. They had virtually no way to communicate with the outside world.

A command center set up before the storm stopped working when the backup generator ran out of diesel fuel. Cellphone towers had been knocked out by high winds. Many land lines in the area were unusable.

When emergency power finally returned to the Hyatt, Scott Domke, a member of the city's technology team, remembered that he had recently set up an Internet phone account with Vonage Holdings Corp. He was able to find a working socket in a conference room and linked his laptop to an Internet connection.

At 12:27 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, the mayor's inner circle made its first outside call in two days. Eventually, the team was able to get eight lines running from the single Vonage account. That evening, the phone rang and it was President Bush calling from Air Force One.

Why VoIP Telephony is Quickly Coming of Age

Why VoIP Telephony is Quickly Coming of Age

September 9, 2005

By Michiyo Nakamoto, Mark Odell, Paul Taylor and Richard Waters

One of the pioneers of internet telephony this week reached a milestone. Vonage Holdings, a New Jersey-based start-up, announced that, less than two-and-a-half years after it launched its consumer services, it had signed up its millionth paying customer. Jeffrey Citron, Vonage's chief executive, talked of its having created "a tidal wave of change" in a dormant telecommunications industry.

In the hyperbole-prone technology world, such claims might be easily dismissed. But most analysts agree that the recent dramatic growth of residential services and subscriber numbers using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - albeit from a relatively small base - points to a big future for the technology.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 9, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Today we will look at all this talk that Skype may be putting itself up for sale, and what that might or might not mean for Vonage. In our popular Friday In the Blogs feature, we review what some of the VoIP bloggers we read regularly have written about this week. Finally, we'll look at a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread from someone who is moving and wants to be sure when in that process he should notify his current phone company that he wants to switch over his phone number to a Vonage number. Finally, we'll tell you about a thread in which one of our most helpful Vonage Forum members is asking other Forum Members to help him out with a short test.

Internet 'Phones' Hot Stuff During Labour Dispute

September 7, 2005

By Sheila Potter

The long-feared competition has finally arrived for the big phone companies - and its just a mouse click away.

If you haven't yet heard of Voice Over Internet Provider (VOIP) services, you soon will. Also known as "digital phones" or "Internet telepohony", VOIP is a telephone technology where the signal is carried over the Internet rather than across phone lines.

So far it hasn't made large inroads into Greater Victoria, but companies like Vonage are starting to offer local service with a Victoria area code. Among the new VOIP companies jumping into the local market is a small, three-man outfit called AcroVoice.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 8, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Lots of news today, so let's get busy. As the U.S. gears up to find new homes for the victims of flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina, we'll read some newly released info on how much Vonage traffic declined from normal level in the days after the storm. We'll read Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron's suggestions to the U.S. Congress about what they can do to upgrade the E911 system in the U.S.- making E911 over Vonage that much simpler to implement and maintain. We'll catch up on an award Vonage has won. We'll get one expert's take on just how and why those Vonage ads are special. We'll look at a Vonage VoIP Forum thread about how to get a second phone to work with a new Vonage connection, and what that pulsating dial tone means when you pick up your Vonage-connected phone.

Vonage Reaches A Million Subscribers

September 6, 2005

By Ben Charny

Internet phone operator Vonage said Tuesday it now has more than a million customers, marking another milestone for the nascent industry of selling phone calls over Internet connections.

The 4-year-old firm, based in Edison, N.J., smashed the million mark on the strength of its present advertising campaign, which Jupiter Research analyst Joe Laszlo said he considers to be among the top two currently on the Internet.

Vonage Holdings Corp. is the largest of the new breed of phone operators selling VOIP (voice over IP), which is software that digitizes phone calls so they can travel over the Internet just like e-mail.

Statement of Jeffrey Citron Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Vonage

Committee on Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation

September 1, 2005

Good morning Senator Burns and members of the Committee. Thank you for the opportunity to appear here today. I'm Jeffrey Citron, CEO of Vonage Holdings Corporation. We are the leading provider of consumer and small business Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in the United States, with nearly one million subscriber lines. Vonage is at the forefront of this new emerging market, which has approximately 2.3 million users, and as such we are also quickly becoming a leader in E911, as we move to deploy the first ever nationwide 911 service. This will be the first 911 service designed for an IP environment, across hundreds of locally controlled Selective Routers and thousands of Public Safety Answering Points. This is a serious undertaking. And we at Vonage are embracing this challenge not just for our customers but as a partner in the nation's E911 system. As we move forward in this exciting time in 911, VoIP is helping turn the notion of traditional 911 networking on its head. We are recognizing new opportunities to blend voice and data into exciting new offerings, but we are also confronting long-standing technical, operational and competitive barriers, as we try to connect to a system that all too often is obsolete and sheltered by old- fashioned telecom thinking.
