 Internet Phone Calls

Vonage In Print News

September 15, 2005

By Richard Wray

Unlike Skype, Vonage is not a software-based service so it does not matter what computer or operating system you use. Once you have gone through the online signup process you are sent an adaptor that plugs into your broadband connection, you plug your existing phone into it and you are ready to call.

The trouble is that you need an Ethernet router. Most ISPs send their broadband customers a modem that plugs into a computer's USB port. This will not work with Vonage. Ethernet routers are easy to find and relatively cheap, with D-Link and Netgear being two popular brands. NTL and Telewest customers who use their cable provider to access the internet may already have an Ethernet modem (if you are unsure, ask your service provider).

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 14, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

First, some exciting news. Early this morning (or was that late last night?) at precisely 12:52 a.m., we got our 12 millionth page view since we started the Forum back on March, 2003. Considering that we "only" got our 11 millionth page view on August 15, that means our site visitors have read more than one million of our pages in the last month alone. Not bad, considering I know that some of you folks were by the beach over Labor Day!

Say, 12 million is a nice round number. I even made a screen capture of our page view counter as we hit that magic mark. Here it is:

OK, let's see what's up for today. We'll get the latest on Vonage's online ad spending for August, and how that compares with the spending of other ads you may notice online. We'll look at what Vonage will be doing today to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. We'll read Vonage VoIP Forum threads on a Vonage adapter light that won't go out and a Vonage router that won't connect.

More Albertans Than Ever Can Now Fire Their Phone Company

Vonage Press ReleasesVonage® Canada Extends Availability of Internet Phone Service in Several Alberta Communities

Mississauga, ON, September 13, 2005 – Vonage Canada, a leading provider of Internet phone service, today announced the availability of its flat-rate, full-featured Voice over IP (VoIP) service in Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray and Grand Prairie, Alberta. Residents of these communities have always been able to use Vonage for local and long distance phone service, but had to choose a number with an area code outside of their respective municipalities. That’s all changed with Vonage’s expansion. Now customers can keep their current phone number or select a new phone number local to their community and enjoy a host of innovative phone features at a low monthly rate with Vonage Canada’s Internet phone service. Albertans now have the option to hang up on their traditional phone service provider.

VoIP Gets Place in the Sun After Katrina

Vonage In Print News

September 12, 2005

By Howard Buskirk

VoIP carriers have benefited from good publicity in the days since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. VoIP sources said they hope the anecdotal evidence helps the industry make its case for extending the FCC's late-Nov. deadline for VoIP carriers to connect all their customers to emergency call centers.

The recent wave of publicity stands in contrast to what was probably the VoIP industry's darkest day -- the May FCC meeting, when witnesses testified how their lives had been put at risk because their VoIP phones failed to connect to emergency services. Vonage, the nation's largest independent VoIP operator, was mentioned by name during the May meeting, but has gotten positive mentions in recent days.

WiFi Phone Taps into Home Wireless Broadband Nets

Vonage In Print News

September 12, 2005

By Dawn C. Chmielewski

Cordless phones, your days are numbered.

An emerging class of WiFi phones lets you tap into your wireless home network to make calls over the Internet, without the snap, crackle or pop of a cordless. Indeed, it might one day make cellular phones (can you hear me now?) obsolete, as well.

The new F1000 WiFi phone from UTStarcom will be available in October through Internet phone provider Vonage. It provides a glimpse of the future, where people will one day be able to use the high-speed data networks springing up in airports, coffee houses and copy shops to make phone calls, not just check their e-mail.

 Log On and Say Hello

Vonage In Print News

September 11, 2005

By Kim Leonard

A call made over the Internet will sound about the same as one made on a traditional home phone.

Still, Internet-based phone services such as Vonage, Verizon VoiceWing and AT&T CallVantage are signing up customers steadily for two reasons: They cost less than comparable, regular phone service and their special features appeal to professionals and others who want more control over when and where they receive calls.

Most consumers still know very little about Internet calling, known as Voice over Internet Protocol service. But in the Pittsburgh area, they're about to see offers from at least four companies that are jumping into the emerging field.

New Orleans City Government Improvises VoIP Solution: Fields Bush Call

Vonage In Print News

September 10, 2005

By Russell Shaw

The Wall Street Journal reports that during the first several days of the crisis after Hurricane Katrina hit, New Orleans city officials used VoIP for most of their communications with the outside world.

Cell and land-line service was down. Satellite telephony is expensive, plus the type of satellite phones available to city officials had limited battery life and long charge-up times.

The VoIP deployment took place at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown New Orleans. A good part of the city's infrastructure had relocated there as and after the storm hit.

 Mobile Phone Uses VOIP

Vonage In Print News

September 10, 2005

By Terry Maxon

Imagine having a cordless phone that can make calls anywhere you can find a wireless network.

That's what the upcoming UTStarcom F1000 phone promises – a Wi-Fi phone connection you can take with you.

Of course, many consumers may say they already have such a phone: They call it a "cellphone," and it can make calls just about anywhere, with no need to be near a Wi-Fi hotspot like the UTStarcom.

But the advantage to the UTStarcom and other Wi-Fi phones is that they use voice over Internet protocol technology. VoIP service usually costs a lot less per month than cellular or traditional phone service.
