Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 28, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Lots of news today, so let's get busy. Today we will read about the FCC extending its deadline for Vonage and other VoIP service subscribers to acknowledge they understand the current limitations of E-911 access over VoIP. We'll read an article about why the head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission thinks VoIP services are an important part of the nation's security. Once again, we'll look at all this talk about Vonage making themselves a public company and selling stock.  We'll look at Vonage VoIP Forum threads from a Forum Member who had been trying to solve a bug in Vonage's Click2 Call feature, as well as from a Forum Member and student with a question about Vonage's CallerID.

Vonage(R) Commends FCC for 911 Acknowledgement Requirement Extention

Vonage Press Releases

Vonage(R) Commends FCC for Extending Enforcement Deadline on Affirmative Acknowledgement Requirement for 911 Order

EDISON, N.J., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Vonage America, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp., announced today that in an effort to comply with the FCC's 911 Order, it has gained affirmative acknowledgement from nearly 99% of its customers to date. Vonage has been working diligently since July to gain affirmative acknowledgement of the differences between VoIP 911 services and traditional Enhanced 911. The company will continue to pursue acknowledgement from the remaining 10,000 customers and Vonage will inform the commission when it has gained affirmative acknowledgement from 100% of its customers.

"We commend the FCC's decisive action to extend the enforcement deadline and on behalf of our nearly one million customers, thank them for their consideration of this critical public safety issue," said Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO, Vonage Holdings Corp. "The Commission has put much thought and deliberation into establishing a baseline threshold of 90% affirmative acknowledgement and should be praised for their leadership."

 Vonage Selects IPO Bankers

Vonage In Print News

September 27, 2005

Mark Sullivan, Reporter

VOIP poster-child Vonage has chosen the investment banks to take it public, sources familiar with the situation say, but some of the bankers involved believe an acquisition might be a better long-term strategy for the N.J. company.

After a six-month bake-off, Vonage has chosen Citibank, UBS AG, and Deutsche Bank AG to lead the IPO, which will happen in five to six months, the sources say.

Sources say the banks will make the usual preparations for issuing stock, while privately holding conversations with potential acquirers. Vonage spokeswoman Brooke Schulz says her company can't comment on the matter.

Internet Calling Starts To Ring True Locally

Vonage In Print News

September 27, 2005

By Wendy Brown

Steve Bumpous of Santa Fe signed up for Internet phone service nearly a year ago, and so far he says it has worked great for him.

Bumpous likes the fact that he can take his access box with him anywhere he can get high-speed Internet service and still use the same phone number. “It’s kind of like the mark of the beast,” he said. “You take it with you everywhere .”

He also likes the cost — currently $21.95 a month for unlimited local and long-distance calls through Computer Network Service Professionals of Santa Fe.

 Chip Off The Andretti Block

Vonage In Print News

September 24, 2005

By Stephen P. Jensen

If the name doesn't grab you — and it should — then this will: Marco Andretti has started only three Indy Racing League Menards Infiniti Pro Series events, all from the pole.

Not impressed? You should be.

He won them all.

At 18 years old and looking all of 14, Andretti is already a race veteran, and not just through fireside chats with father Michael and legendary grandpa Mario. He moved into open-wheel racing in 2003, winning the Skip Barber Eastern Series championship.

In 2004 he partnered with Motorola, Vonage and Twizzlers, capturing Skip Barber's Formula Dodge National Series title, as well as the Formula TR 1600 championship. And this year, while he competes as a rule in the Star Mazda Championship Series, Sunday's Corning 100 will be his fourth Infiniti Pro Series start.

 Helping Miss. Town

Vonage In Print News

September 24, 2005

By Nirmal Mitra

Two township officials and a first-aid volunteer were closely watching the progress of Hurricane Rita as they camped out Friday in a motor home in Pass Christian, Miss., after delivering a load of cleaning materials to residents of the hurricane-ravaged community.

"The bulk of the storm is missing us, but we're getting the side effects — rain and warnings of severe weather," said Mike Simpson, the team's leader, in a telephone interview from Pass Christian, which was under a tornado watch Friday.

Helping Biloxi Get Rid Of The Blues

Vonage In Print News

September 24, 2005

By Alex Paul

Imagine virtually all of the trees in Linn and Benton counties blown over at the same time. That would be a first step toward understanding the actual damage experienced by communities along the Gulf of Mexico, Matt Turkington, an Oregon State University senior and disaster volunteer, said about life after Hurricane Katrina.

Turkington, 22, of Beaverton, arrived Sept. 10 in Biloxi, Miss., as leader of a 10-member volunteer team whose goal is helping communities establish Internet-based communication systems, via computers and special telephones.

 Congress Seeks Improved Disaster Communications

Vonage In Print News

September 26, 2005

By Dibya Sarkar

The country needs a more comprehensive alert system and better protocols to redirect emergency calls during crises that disable public-safety dispatch centers, the Federal Communications Commission’s chairman said.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin added that first responders need interoperable and mobile wireless communications systems that they can rapidly deploy anywhere. That includes smart radios, which users can easily tune to different frequencies and formats. The communications industry has been working on such devices, called software-defined radios, but has developed only prototypes.

FCC Chief Proposes Fixes To Support Disaster Relief

Vonage In Print News

September 23, 2005

By D. W. Gardner

With Hurricane Rita bearing down on the Gulf Coast, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin told a Senate Committee that the nation needs a truly mobile communications infrastructure that will draw on the latest technologies in disaster situations.

“If we learned anything from Hurricane Katrina, it is that we cannot rely solely on terrestrial communications,” Martin told the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Thursday. “When radio towers are knocked down, satellite communications are, in some instances, the most effective means of communicating.
