Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 20, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

You'll never guess where I am right now. I am on the Interstate, driving to Boston to attend the Fall 2005 VON (Voice Over Internet) trade show. Lots of new gizmos and other stuff that you can, or soon will be able to use with your Vonage service.  I've pulled over to a donut shop off one of the highway exits, where I am filing this edition from my laptop over my Verizon high-speed connection. Might even grab a donut after I send this file off to our Web host..

Today we will read about what solution Vonage has chosen to enable a key component of its E-911 service. We'll also learn about some equipment Vonage will use to test VoIP over Wi-Fi. We'll read a Vonage VoIP Forum thread on a router that automatically resets itself at the same strange our in the middle of the night – every night. Another thread we'll look at concerns a Vonage user who can't seem to get a dial tone.

 New Lines of Communication

Vonage In Print News

September 16, 2005

By Jonathan Krim

As crews rush to restore basic telephone and Internet services to areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, some executives, academics and analysts are urging a more ambitious approach: Make New Orleans and the surrounding areas super-connected communities, with advanced services that surpass what is available anywhere in the country, if not the world.

With many poles and wires reduced to sticks and spaghetti, cell towers down, miles of streets still flooded, and parts of the region uninhabitable for the near future, these experts see the perfect opportunity to deploy new systems that otherwise might be too expensive or disruptive to build.

The result, they say, could be a bonanza of higher technology at lower prices for businesses and consumers, more robust emergency-responder systems and an ability to provide high-speed Internet access to poorer segments of the population often left off of the information highway.

Internet Calling's Role in Katrina Aftermath Understated

Vonage In Print News

September 16, 2005

By David W. Gardner

VoIP enthusiasts say that Internet telephony played a wider role than may be generally appreciated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

VoIP delivered some important communications service after traditional landline and cell phone service collapsed, they insist, while complaining that VoIP providers should have been represented at Thursday’s FCC meeting at BellSouth facilities in Atlanta.

“Text messaging, e-mail, Web-obtained information, video blogs and other streaming media and other IP-based applications were instrumental in keeping people connected and informed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina,” Jeff Pulver, a VoIP expert and creator of the Voice Over Net conferences, said in an e-mail.

 Katrina: Community Tech Response

Vonage In Print News

September 16, 2005

Community groups on the ground in areas hit by Katrina provide needed tech.

I have been coordinating remotely with a few groups on the ground who are working to connect people affected by Katrina to the Internet and to the phone system. Here's a report from afar.

There are a number of groups working together to provide Internet and VoIP telephone connectivity to people affected by Katrina.

CU Wireless, a project of the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, has been helping coordinate project donations and has a mailing list.

Vonage® Chooses Azimuth® Test Solutions to Validate Its Emerging

Vonage Press ReleasesLeading VoIP Service Provider to Use Azimuth’s W-Series for Wide-Scale Testing

ACTON, MA- September 19, 2005 - Azimuth® Systems, Inc., the leading provider of Wi-Fi® test equipment, today announced that Vonage® Network, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp, the leading provider of broadband telephony service, is employing Azimuth’s W-Series 802.11 test platform. The W-Series will be used to validate Vonage’s Wi-Fi solution for the soon-to-be-released Wi-Fi handset for the residential and SOHO markets.

Earlier this year, Vonage announced its plans to roll out a Wi-Fi handset to augment its broadband VoIP services, offering its customers mobility across 802.11 networks. By standardizing on Azimuth’s VoWi-Fi test solutions, Vonage can quickly and easily support that its services are meeting the company’s high quality standards. In addition, the alliance allows Vonage to assure that its interoperability and performance standards are maintained. These benefits will allow Vonage customers to realize new quality services in a quick time-to-market.

Vonage® Selects Level 3 To Expand 911 Capabilities

Vonage Press ReleasesNew VoIP Contract Will Provide Vonage With E-911 Solution for Nomadic VoIP Customers

EDISON, N.J. and BLOOMFIELD, COLO., Sept. 19, 2005 – Vonage Network, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp, a leading provider of broadband phone service, today announced it has selected Level 3 Communications, LLC, the U.S. operating subsidiary of Level 3 Communications, Inc. Under the terms of the agreement, Level 3 will deliver its Level(3) E-911 Direct(SM) service to support Vonage's E-911 rollout.

"Vonage is running hard and fast to meet the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) 120-day deadline to turn up E-911 service throughout our footprint. To meet this ambitious goal, physical connectivity is the first critical piece of infrastructure we need to build to get our calls to the selective routers," said Martin Hakim Din, senior vice president, Architecture, Vonage Network. "Level 3 offered the comprehensive and reliable set of services that enables us to get these connections up and running."

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 16, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Today we will look at a new bill being drafted in the U.S. Congress that if passed and signed, will have a major impact on Vonage, and VoIP in general. In our popular Friday In the Blogs feature, we review what some of the VoIP bloggers we read regularly have written about this week. Finally, we'll look at a new Vonage VoIP Forum thread about why Vonage service fades in some parts of a user's home, and how to boost network speeds on Vonage setups that involve the router-like Apple Airport appliance.
