Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 23, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today’s edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Today we will read about a new solution Vonage is putting in place that will let you test your Vonage service to see the extent of E-911 emergency services in your area. In our popular In The Blogs feature, we’ll see what some VoIP bloggers we regularly read are writing about this week. We'll read a Vonage VoIP Forum thread on the availability of Vonage service in areas likely to be affected by Hurricane Rita, as well as a thread with a question about Vonage service Caller I.D.

It took nature a moment to expose the vulnerable side to the world's lone superpower. By the time Hurricane Katrina was done, prevention was not one of the options. What remained was taking measure of the losses and building back what nature had demolished.

The KatrinaHelp project went into action shortly after the killer hurricane, brought to life by willing volunteers across the globe. It was put together by volunteers who made the promise of the Internet felt in December 2004 with the SEA-EAT (South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami) project.

KatrinaHelp used tools like Wiki, VoIP and blogs to get things done. Dina Mehta, researcher and Mumbai-based blogger, was one of the volunteers bringing together those offering help and those who needed it. She also contributed to the KatrinaHelp Wiki, and talked to volunteers who called in offering help on the team's virtual call centre.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 22, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

I'm just back from a drive up to Boston and a fascinating day at the Fall VON (Voice Over Net) trade show, and a visit with a family member who was surprised to see me!

Today we will read about what Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron spoke about during his keynote at the Fall VON conference. We'll see what some investment bankers recommend as a wise strategy for Vonage going forward.  We'll read a Vonage VoIP Forum thread on a question a Forum Member has about the possibility of making simultaneous calls, and a thread in which a Member is looking for a solution to "beeping" during Vonage calls.

 Vonage(R) Introduces TCS VoIP Verify(TM)

Vonage Press ReleasesNew 9-3-3 Service Provides Vonage Customers the Ability to Know How Their Emergency Call Will Be Handled

ANNAPOLIS, MD and EDISON, NJ--(MARKET WIRE)--Sep 22, 2005 -- TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) (NasdaqNM:TSYS), a global leader in mission critical communications, today announced that Vonage, a leading provider of broadband phone service, is the first Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service provider to utilize TCS' recently introduced VoIP Verify(TM) service. Designed for mobility, VoIP Verify provides Vonage subscribers with a simple tool to determine the availability and extent of the individual's emergency services coverage from the caller's current registered location.

When Vonage customers dial 9-3-3 from their Vonage service, VoIP Verify informs the user how his or her distress call will be routed, and what information the Vonage user should be prepared to provide to the emergency services call taker. Offering subscribers the ability to hear verification of their 9-1-1 coverage status at any time simply by placing a VoIP call demonstrates Vonage's continuing determination to provide its subscribers with a comprehensive solution set for their emergency services needs.

Level 3 Announces E-911 Direct Service, Signs Vonage

Vonage In Print News

September 20, 2005

By Staff

Level 3 Communications announced the launch of its Level(3) E-911 Direct service as part of its VoIP portfolio. The offering includes both Level 3's fixed location and nomadic VoIP E-911 capabilities, supporting an FCC-compliant E-911 solution for interconnected VoIP providers. Using Level(3) E-911 Direct service VoIP providers can achieve compliance with the FCC's mandate for VoIP providers to deliver to their customers E-911 functionality.

Vonage has become the first customer to select the Level(3) E-911 Direct service to support nomadic VoIP customers. Level 3 anticipates that its nomadic solution will be implemented in the fourth quarter 2005, and the two companies plan to begin deploying E-911 service for Vonage customers in that quarter.

Vonage Chooses Azimuth for Wi-Fi Handset Tests

Vonage In Print News

September 19, 2005

By Staff

Azimuth Systems has announced that Vonage Network, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp, is employing Azimuth’s W-Series 802.11 test platform. The W-Series will be used to validate Vonage’s Wi-Fi solution for the soon-to-be-released Wi-Fi handset for the residential and SOHO markets.

Earlier this year, Vonage announced its plans to roll out a Wi-Fi handset to augment its broadband VoIP services, offering its customers mobility across 802.11 networks. “As the leading provider of full-featured, affordable, broadband phone services across North America, we must be able to certify and validate that our VoIP solution, as well as the equipment we are deploying, meets our standards for availability and quality-of-voice service,” said Louis Mamakos, CTO of Vonage Holdings Corp. “Azimuth’s unmatched testing capabilities--particularly in the areas of Wi-Fi performance, multi-vendor interoperability, and industry standards conformance--help us support that our customers receive a high level of satisfaction from Vonage’s Wi-Fi phone.”

Vonage Taps Level 3 For Key E911 Services

Vonage In Print News

September 19, 2005

By Staff

With the clock quickly ticking down, Level 3 Communications today signed voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) agreements covering enhanced 911 services with Vonage and TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) – with Vonage as a customer and TCS as a supplier. At the same time, Level 3 launched a new “E-911 Direct” offering it says supports both fixed location and nomadic capabilities that are Federal Communications Commission-compliant E911 solutions for interconnected VoIP providers.

The Level 3 deals with Vonage and TCS ostensibly are intrinsic to an earlier arrangement (TelecomWeb news break, July 26) in which Vonage contracted with TCS – whose specialty has been E911 services for the wireless industry – to run an E911 "fallback center" for 911 calls from VoIP customers who can't be automatically routed to correct official public service answering points (PSAP) that handle emergency calls. Level 3 claims network connections to PSAPs serving approximately 67 percent of all U.S. households, with a projected buildout to 70 percent by year’s end.

 After Katrina

Vonage In Print News

September 19, 2005

Redundancy creates reliability. Only a Vonage VOIP line connected the Mayor of New Orleans and the U.S. President when BellSouth went down. The cheapest and hence easiest new network to add is wireless. This should start ASAP, whether it’s a municipal build, a public-private partnership, an out of territory Bell, or Clear Wire as provider. Include a few batteries, of course, but make it happen. Finance it out of the public safety budget, or even better, out of the E-Rate.
