Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 14 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. In today's edition, we'll see how much Vonage spent on Internet advertising last month, and where that ranks when compared with other advertisers. We'll catch up on some appearances Vonage execs will make later this month where E-911 is sure to be discussed. In our popular Friday In the Blogs feature, we review what some of the VoIP bloggers we read regularly have written about this week. Finally, we'll look at a new Vonage VoIP Forum threads about those hidden excise taxes on Vonage service, as well as what a Vonage subscriber who has had the service for a year now really thinks about it.

 Vonage UK Phone Adapter

Vonage In Print News

October 14, 2005

By Paul Smart

This offers a very similar service to that I reviewed earlier this year, the main difference is that this is a portable service and can be connected to any standard router.

As far as the service is concerned it seems the same as reviewed on the 24/6/05 in the Vonage VOIP article, you can either enter ‘Vonage’ into the GadgetSpeak search engine of work back through the reviews to the 24th June.

The big difference is rather than a special router being provided you get a far smaller phone adapter that itself plugs into your router. As yet nothing has been provided for users of USB modems.

In today's edition, we'll look at one investment banking analyst thinks about Vonage, and visit another one of those pesky "is Vonage for sale" rumors. We'll also look at a new Vonage VoIP Forum threads about transferring toll-free numbers, and a thread with details about Vonage equipment shipping to Canadian customers.

Vonage Review: VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Telephone System with Vonage service

Vonage In Print News

October 11, 2005

By Tim Higgins

Summary:
5.8GHz two-handset cordless phone system with integrated wired VoIP router. Does not interfere with 802.11 wireless LANs.

Pros:
• Easy install
• Includes two handsets; expandable to four
• Does not interfere with 11b/g WLANs

Cons:
• Can't be used with other VoIP services
• Can't be used as a "normal" cordless phone
• Single line only

Introduction:
Vonage has been expanding its hardware offerings beyond its base of wired ATAs and wired and wireless VoIP routers. We have looked at an older offering, the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with 2 Phone Ports (WRT54GP2) and more recently a Beta of its upcoming Wi-Fi VoIP phone. This time, I'll look at another wire-free Vonage product—the VTech Broadband Telephone System with Vonage service (BTS).

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll point you to two well-written reviews- of the Vonage service itself, and then about the VTech Broadband Telephone System (BTS) with Vonage service. We'll also review an interesting new Vonage Forum thread about how a user "hung up" on the fact that his Vonage connection wouldn't hang up after a call attacked the problem - and the advice some helpful fellow Vonage Forum Members gave him along the way.

Annual Meeting Embraces Lucy and Ethel and Does a Little Gecko-Bashing

Vonage In Print News

October 11, 2005

By Stuart Elliott

HERE is a look back at some of the highlights, lowlights and sidelights of the 95th annual meeting of the Association of National Advertisers, attended by more than 900 people here last Thursday through Sunday.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY One topic discussed by many speakers during the conference was branded entertainment, the integration of products and sponsors into movies and television programming. One speaker provided a timely reminder of how pervasive it once was.

During a presentation, Julie A. Roehm, director for marketing communications at the DaimlerChrysler Corporation, screened a clip from a 1959 episode of the "Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse," a weekly series on CBS. In the clip, the cast of "I Love Lucy," a Desilu production, was joined by Betty Furness, the longtime Westinghouse spokeswoman, to deliver a commercial for Westinghouse appliances that Ms. Roehm timed at 3 minutes, 44 seconds.

In the commercial, Furness showed off " '59 appliances at less than '49 prices" to Lucille Ball, as Lucy Ricardo, and Vivian Vance, as Ethel Mertz. As Ms. Furness pointed out a "programmed computer washer," Lucy asked, "What's a programmed computer?" Ms. Furness's reply: "It's like a built-in brain."

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll check in on Vonage's progress toward implementing E911 solutions. We'll read a report from a Mac site that reports a bug between the QuickTime multimedia player and the voice mail retrieval feature of Vonage's site. We'll also tell you about a solution. (hint: the problem is not Vonage's). And finally on the Vonage VoIP Forum, we'll look at a question a Forum Member has about setting up call forwarding without going through the Vonage Web interface.

The Internet Enters A Bold Second Act

Vonage In Print News

October 10, 2005

By Mark Trumbull

Across the high-tech landscape, tectonic plates are shifting.

Google, the company that's king of the online search, recently offered to provide wireless Internet access to the entire city of San Francisco - for free.

Apple Computer now offers an iPod music player so tiny it could get lost in your wallet.

And the British Broadcasting Corp. is starting to offer many of its TV programs in digitized formats online

This is a far different boom from the dotcom craze of the late 1990s. It is the Web's sober second act, characterized not by soaring stock prices but by forces that are challenging traditional industries - from publishing to telecommunications - to adopt new business plans. Consumers seem to be the only sure winners.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 10, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. Before we begin, I have some exciting news. On Saturday, the Vonage VoIP Forum got our 13 millionth page view since we started out here in March, 2003. Each time you click on a page within the Forum, that's one page view. It took us only about 22 days to make the leap from 12 to 13 million page views. Doing the math, that tells us we are getting about 45,000 clicks a day!

In today's edition, we'll look at a non-techie news reporter's account of how easy it was for her to set up Vonage service at home, and an article in which a techie news reporter describes how and why Vonage is cheaper than standard phone services. We'll also look at an article honoring Vonage chief marketing officer Dean Harris as a Marketer of the Year. We'll review Vonage VoIP Forum threads that link to some funny new Vonage tv ads, and also tell a reader how to solve the problem with non-functioning "*70" call-waiting block service,,,,,, as well as introduce you to our newest Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the Week.

Same Phone, Same Number, Big Savings

Vonage In Print News

October 7, 2005

By Sue Vorenberg

Don't let my phone jack hit you on the way out.

I've joined the digital telephone revolution, and I didn't even have to put on a funny hat and shout "vive le phone" to do it.

In the past month, I've switched my telephone service from $60-a-month Qwest to $25-a-month Vonage.

The funny thing is that I get more features now for $25 a month than I did when I was stuck with the big monopoly, and I still have the same phone number.

Vonage and another company called Net2Phone sell telephone service through your high speed Internet connection. The switch is a lot easier than you might think.

The thought of setting up a phone through the Internet used to make me nervous, until I looked into it. Turns out, they'll send you a router - a thing you can plug into your modem - and it has a normal phone jack in it that you can hook your regular old wall phone into. And the computer doesn't have to be on for the thing to work.
