Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 18, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. In today's edition, we will dwell heavily on E911, looking at news stories about a new solution Vonage just signed up for on Monday; where and when a key Vonage exec will give his thoughts on Vonage's E911 effort, and then finally, what your obligations are toward Vonage and E911- which you should take care of before Halloween. In keeping with the 911 theme of today's Digest, we'll look at a new forum with lots of posts from readers who have been wondering if their Vonage service was equipped to handle 911 calls or if they needed to resubmit their information in order for it to work properly.

 Trimming Tech Bills

Vonage In Print News

October 24, 2005

By Jeremy Kaplan

Americans spend as much as $200 to $300 a month staying connected with home and mobile phones, Internet access, TiVo and premium TV. Not only are we laying out an additional 20% more each month than we did a decade ago, but as new features come on board--ringtones, downloadable movies and higher-speed Web access--the costs are sure to go higher still. But there are lots of ways to get the same services for less. For starters ...

Limits On Wireless Leave U.S. At Risk

Vonage In Print News

October 16, 2005

By Reed Hundt

For the past two years, everyone in Washington has agreed that the country needs a new telecommunications law. But no one has been able to provide a reason in terms that any voter could grasp. One of the many outcomes of the Katrina and Rita catastrophes is that we all know, tragically and inescapably, that America needs a new, up-to-date communications network. If a law will give us that, then Congress should pass that law. In a hurry.

We can start by identifying some things not to do. For example, Louisiana and Florida adopted legislation in recent years intended to slow the deployment of municipal wireless broadband communications networks. These states are not alone; a dozen other legislatures have tried to slow the deployment of municipal broadband.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 17, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. In today's edition, we'll check in on how a Vonage-sponsored race car driver with a very famous name did last Saturday, and for the season. We'll read new Vonage VoIP Forum threads on a variety of topics, including a voice mail indicator that won't work behind a firewall, whether or not to buy a $10 stand Linksys offers for its Vonage-compatible equipment, and just what might be causing disconnects that one Vonage user and Vonage Forum member is experiencing. We'll also meet our current Vonage VoIP Forum member of the week.

 Vonage(R) Selects Covergence's Eclipse

Vonage Press ReleasesDeployment of Covergence's Eclipse to Play Integral Role in Vonage's E-911 Solution

MAYNARD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 2005--Covergence, the first company to deliver a unified security and management solution for applications and services based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), today announced that Vonage Network, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp. and a leading provider of broadband phone service, will use Covergence's Eclipse to provide E-911 call routing, E-911 call recording and E-911 call detail records.

By deploying Eclipse, Vonage can intelligently route E-911 calls to the correct emergency services gateway, based on the customer information retrieved from the E-911 service bureau database. This will assist Vonage in its aggressive plans to meet FCC guidelines required of VoIP service providers to offer reliable E-911 services. In addition, Eclipse allows Vonage to record and create records of E-911 calls, helping the company to easily and accurately view historical information, and ensuring that the Vonage E-911 environment continually delivers optimum call quality.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 14 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. In today's edition, we'll see how much Vonage spent on Internet advertising last month, and where that ranks when compared with other advertisers. We'll catch up on some appearances Vonage execs will make later this month where E-911 is sure to be discussed. In our popular Friday In the Blogs feature, we review what some of the VoIP bloggers we read regularly have written about this week. Finally, we'll look at a new Vonage VoIP Forum threads about those hidden excise taxes on Vonage service, as well as what a Vonage subscriber who has had the service for a year now really thinks about it.

 Vonage UK Phone Adapter

Vonage In Print News

October 14, 2005

By Paul Smart

This offers a very similar service to that I reviewed earlier this year, the main difference is that this is a portable service and can be connected to any standard router.

As far as the service is concerned it seems the same as reviewed on the 24/6/05 in the Vonage VOIP article, you can either enter ‘Vonage’ into the GadgetSpeak search engine of work back through the reviews to the 24th June.

The big difference is rather than a special router being provided you get a far smaller phone adapter that itself plugs into your router. As yet nothing has been provided for users of USB modems.

Vonage Review: VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Telephone System with Vonage service

Vonage In Print News

October 11, 2005

By Tim Higgins

Summary:
5.8GHz two-handset cordless phone system with integrated wired VoIP router. Does not interfere with 802.11 wireless LANs.

Pros:
• Easy install
• Includes two handsets; expandable to four
• Does not interfere with 11b/g WLANs

Cons:
• Can't be used with other VoIP services
• Can't be used as a "normal" cordless phone
• Single line only

Introduction:
Vonage has been expanding its hardware offerings beyond its base of wired ATAs and wired and wireless VoIP routers. We have looked at an older offering, the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with 2 Phone Ports (WRT54GP2) and more recently a Beta of its upcoming Wi-Fi VoIP phone. This time, I'll look at another wire-free Vonage product—the VTech Broadband Telephone System with Vonage service (BTS).

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 12, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

In today's edition, we'll point you to two well-written reviews- of the Vonage service itself, and then about the VTech Broadband Telephone System (BTS) with Vonage service. We'll also review an interesting new Vonage Forum thread about how a user "hung up" on the fact that his Vonage connection wouldn't hang up after a call attacked the problem - and the advice some helpful fellow Vonage Forum Members gave him along the way.
