 Calling All Tech-Heads

Vonage In Print News

November 27, 2005

By David Wichner

In a recent survey, consumers said they thought "VoIP" could be a hybrid European auto or a low-carbohydrate vodka.

But VoIP - which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol - may soon become a household term as major telecom providers such as Verizon, America Online, AT&T and even Qwest are taking such Internet-based telephony services to mainstream consumers.

VoIP is available to anyone with a broadband, or high-speed, Internet connection - about 420,000 Arizona households, based on industry estimates.

A Guide To Cheap Online Phone Calls

Vonage In Print News

November 24, 2005

By Cliff Joseph

PC users have long been able to make free calls through instant messaging services such as MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger, but many were dissuaded by the idea of having to buy and wear a headset and the inconvenience of having to make sure that friends and family were online when they fancied a natter.

Well, things have changed since we last wrote about making telephone calls using a broadband connection. A number of services now enable you to use a proper telephone handset to make cheap or free calls by placing an adapter between the broadband modem or router and a standard telephone.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 29, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. In the news, we'll tell you about an email  letter many Vonage subscribers received over the last few days about their E911 service. Because Friday was part of our Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., and we did not publish on that day, we'll run our popular In The Blogs feature today rather than Friday- where we call attention to what the bloggers we read regularly are writing about Vonage.  And we'll point you to a Vonage VoIP Forum thread from a reader who wanted to swap out his wireless router to a wired one, and wondered how doing so would affect his Vonage service..... Finally, we'll introduce you to our newest Vonage VoIP Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage - Some things change over the years, and some are exactly the same

Vonage In Print News

November 19, 2005

By Charles Mathewson

The biggest sources of complaints for Americans are the government, the cable company and the phone company. Their bigness makes it nearly impossible to satisfy customers. Without their bigness, they have no business.

Ma Bell, Baby Bell, Nynex, Verizon. The name changes. It's still the Phone Company. Generations of corporate conditioning have made us all humbled by the telecommunication giant.

For those of you too young to know, or too old to remember, The Bell System had a vise grip on its customers. The Phone Company (the name popularized in the great anti-hero flick "The President's Analyst") owned the lines, the switchboards and the telephones it installed in homes.

Podiatrists May Save Money Switching to VoIP

Vonage In Print News

November 17, 2005

By Liz Lipton

Podiatrists, like all businesspeople, are always looking for ways to reduce their overhead. One suggestion is to consider Voice Over Internet Protocol or VoIP, which allows you to use the Internet as a telephone service, and avoid paying fees to a local and/or long distance telephone company.

Two podiatrists in New York State decreased their phone bills by more than 50 percent each by switching to VoIP phone service. Martin G. Miller, DPM, was paying $3,600 annually for conventional phone service. Since he switched to VoIP, his annual phone expenses were reduced to $838.80. Walter Perez, DPM, was paying about $7,200 annually for traditional analog phone service. His annual phone expenses were reduced to $3,000 after he started using VoIP.

Vonage CEO Says Appointment of pANI Administrator Critical to E911 Rollout

Vonage In Print News

November 15, 2005

By Staff

Vonage urged the FCC to name an administrator to assign the phone number technology VoIP providers need to deploy E-911 capability to nomadic customers. In a Nov. 14 letter to FCC Chmn. Kevin Martin, Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron said availability of pANI-ESQK (pseudo automatic number identification-emergency service query keys) "is an essential gating item for nomadic VoIP E-911 deployment... Most selective routers use 25-year-old technology that's capable of processing no more than a few area codes. As a result, pANI- ESQK is necessary to route a non-regional telephone number through the local selective router. By using pANI-ESQK, a nomadic [VoIP provider] can dynamically assign a number that includes an area code recognized by the relevant selective router, thereby allowing a call to pass through and reach the appropriate [public safety answering point]."

 Calling via Internet cuts costs

Vonage In Print News

November 10, 2005

By Erik Heinrich

Since Mark Skapinker switched to VoIP provider Vonage Canada about two years ago, he hasn't looked back.

"I'm saving a lot of money," says Skapinker, who says he and his wife, Hazel, spend much of their free time on calls to family and friends across North America and overseas.

The main reason the family switched is because long-distance charges for calls to 20-year-old daughter Lisa - a student at Dalhousie University in Halifax - were often more than $40 a month. Combined with the cost of a residential line and overseas long-distance charges, the monthly phone bill approached $100.
