I personally think buying is the better option. Comcast charges $5 per month for rental, so after a year of rental charges, you've basically spent enough to buy the thing. It's also nice to have the choice of what you get. I know Comcast generally gives you whatever junk is in the truck. When I signed up they gave me an RCA modem and I had sub-par performance. But, you can't say anything about that to them because they don't "guarantee" speeds. After I bought the Moto and ditched the rental, my download, and especially upload speeds, were right where they should be, if not a little better than advertised.

Two downsides to owning are if it goes bad, you have to buy another one. But, at their current price point, that's not much of a bruden for most. The other is your cable provider could try to blame your cable modem if you call for an issue. However, that's pretty easy disprove by asking them to send a tech with a modem for testing purposes. If you have a problem and they put a new CM on your line and it clears up, you know you'll probably have to go get a new one.

Those were two issues I thought of when I switched from rent to buy five years ago. So far, I haven't run across either issue.
