...here's a bit of distressing information. I had Sprint local telephone service in North Carolina for years. I always paid the extra fees to keep my number unlisted. Earlier this year, I began to receive calls from sales people, despite being on the national "do not call" registry.
Meanwhile, I switched to Vonage, but the unwanted calls continues, since I kept my old telephone number. I finally asked one caller how they obtained my number. She said "In the phone book!". I said that I was NOT listed in the phone book, and she informed me that it was in fact listed in the VERIZON TALKING PHONE BOOK.
Sprint had sold my number information, even though I had paid for an unlisted number for years, to Verizon. Does anyone else think this is an unethical action, if not outright illegal? I called the NC Utility Commission to complain, but they offered no support. Since I am not a Sprint customer any longer, I have no recourse.
I am furious about this type of invasion of privacy.
