Newbie here....tell me if I am wrong on this, but if I sign up for Vonage, can I simply attach a Vonage router to another phone and cable jack in my house, and still keep my existing Linksys long range wireless router (54g) hooked up to my main pc and Charter Pipeline high speed internet service? I don't want to give up my current router because it allows me to use my laptop out on the deck or in the yard. thanks!

No, the Vonage device requires that it be hooked up to a valid Ethernet connection, not a Cable connection. Your Cable Modem accepts a Cable connection, and outputs (generally) one Ethernet connection. Your router then splits that up into (in the case of the 54G) four wired and many wireless connections.

You SHOULD be able to plug your Vonage unit into your existing router as "just another Ethernet client", like a wired PC, or put the Vonage router into the Cable modem and plug your existing router into it, both with good results. The first solution is generally the better one, as long as your router is a good one, and the 54G is quite good.

If you put the Vonage device into the WRT54G, just make sure that the Vonage device has the highest QoS (Quality of Service) setting in your 54G. Look under "Applications and Gaming" / "QoS", enter the MAC address of your new Vonage device, and set the priority to HIGHEST. That will give the Vonage device all the bandwidth it needs, whenever it asks, which will make sure nothing interferes with your Vonage line.

Nate's explanation is EXACTLY what I have running here, and it works like a gem, as long as QOS is enabled in the 54G. Another point is to turn off the firewall, DHCP and any other useless things in the Vonage equipment; make it a dedicated voice device. Do all your PC connections from the 54G, including DHCP and firewall, and I think you'll be quite pleased.

Here's what it could look like, ignore the other junk, I'm a geek:

You make changes to a Linksys router by using your web browser to go to it. The default address for the WRT54G series is 192.168.1.1 - your manual will give you the default password unless you have changed it (and I heavily recommend changing it if you haven't done so).

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Its the process on the router that assigns IP addresses to the individual nodes (computers) on the network. Also, as far as plugging into a telephone wall jack, you can do it, and use the rest of the jacks as extensions as normal, however you need to disconnect the pair from the Demarcation point outside (the telco's phone line) or you risk frying your Vonage adapter if the telco decides to shoot voltage through it.
