At this time only a Vonage sold F1000 can be used as a Vonage main line with unlimited minutes.

You can, I believe, use other SIP WiFi phones as a Vonage SoftPhone client for an extra charge and with limited minutes.

Does this mean that a phone I get off of Craigslist or Ebay might not work with my Vonage service? Does this mean that I have no choice but to buy new?

You may be able to buy a used Vonage F1000 and get it activated, there have however been issues with getting previously owned equipment activated on Vonage's network in the past.

I am not an expert here, but you might want to try calling Vonage with the MAC address and see if they will activate before you buy.

From what has been posted here, Vonage will activate a Vonage Branded phone ONLY if the person who originally bought it tells them who they sold it to. Otherwise, then consider the phone "lost and found" or stolen.

If the phone is not Vonage branded, but is instead an unlocked phone or one what was sold with a different Voip service (not Vonage), then you can use it with a Vonage soft phone account but you cannot use it as the main device on a standard Vonage unlimited account.

Note also that if the phone IS Vonage branded, you can't use it with any service other than Vonage, unless Vonage unlocks it for you (likely under the same conditions as noted above).

Let me share with you my conversation with Starcom technical support: This is from the manufacturer of the product!

F1000 WIFI Phone

The headset uses a a standard 2.5 mm earjack, that is all the information we have
Customer (SteveJNB) 05/20/2006 03:18 AM
This is NOT solved! I have asked for the headset port impedances so I can source a headset to work with this handset. I don't want yout horrible in the ear unit - I use this phone every day for hours at a time. I want to connect a proper "over the head" headset.
It's a simple request. Please respond else I will update the Vonage User Forum with just how unhelpful you are!
Response (Dario O.) 05/18/2006 04:36 PM
UTstarcom F1000 Headset is manufacturer headset.
Response (Paul V.) 05/18/2006 04:28 PM
1) Go back to where you got the phone
2) Check the WiFi Phone user forum at: http://userforums.utstar.com/ -
this requires registration of a "real" e-mail address, but is otherwise
free.
Customer (SteveJNB) 05/18/2006 02:50 PM
I would like to know which manufacturer's headsets are compatible with this telephone. If you don't know, please provide the impedance specifications for the headset port and I can find the headset that best matches this.

I've used the WIFI phone in place of the RT31P. The audio quality is much worse, far too quiet and most of all, Starcom's technical support is seriously poor as detailed above. If you're thinking of going WIFI, don't bother - at least not with a Starcom F1000. It's cheap and nasty, only supports 802.11B and you can't get a decent headset to fit. Nice try Vonage but please rethink you product partners and development plans.

I'm calling Vonage to go back to the Linsys router and my DECT phone. At least audio quality was good.

It is not clear who you spoke with, but the F1000 should be compatible with pretty much "any" 4-conductor (3 insulating ring) 2.5mm headset. It is not compatible with 3 conductor (2 insulating ring) headsets.

The 4-conductor headsets are commonly sold in the USA labeled "Nokia Style". I am sure that there are some that would not work so well, but most seem to be fine.

I have a 4 core to 3 core converter - that's not the problem. What I need is a headset that is compatible with the UTStarcom. The only item they could suggest was an uncomfortable 'in the ear' unit - they're sold with a spare battery back. So I want to source a proper headset - and I asked for the impedance data so I can search for one. UTStarcom Tech Support deosn't know the technical data for their own products!!! Just how bad is that??
Bottom line - don't even think of going anywhere near Starcom - the product is cheap, the audio quality is very poor and the after sales service seriously ****! Vonage picked a BAD partner.
I've just bought a Motorola pair of DECT handsets to go with the RT31P (yup I'm back on that). Page 11 of the manual - full tech spec of the headset port - from a company that knows how to provide support.
Wait until the GSM/WiFi handsets mature a little, then with a softphone account and the SIP address you can have total mobility.
