I have not used that modem, but I am using an RPT300 with DirecWay Professional. I have had a real problem with outbound audio on calls I make (but not on calls I receive) that support has been working for some time now. I would be interested to know if anyone is having success with Vonage over DirecWay (or another satellite provider) and if so, what their equipment and configuration is.

Based on my DirecWay experience, I would hold off until the source of the outbound audio problem is found and fixed.

Bottom line is - the absolute BEST case is that you'll see about a half second delay between when you say something and can hear a response from the other party, due to the laws of physics and the time it takes for signals to make dual round trips to/from the satellite. In the real world, WORST case *might* be substantially worse than even that, due to latencies, packet loss, etc. You won't really know how close you can get to BEST case until you try, or find someone else who's tried on that same service.

DallasFlier is absolutely right about the delay. In a perfect world it will be very clear audio, but with a delay. It is tolerable but noticable.

I think the main challenge you will have is getting either your ISP or Vonage to even take more than a glancing look at any problems you have. The instant they see (or hear) the word "satellite" they switch to the defensive and start spouting off semi-choerent things about latency and bandwidth. Once they start that, it is almost insurmountable. You have to be very smart about both satellite and networking to catch them in inconsitencies that will keep the support ticket going up the chain.

The things that I hear most from Vonage are:

The latency is too high.

This is their absolute favorite "Ace up the sleeve" for satellite broadband Voip problems. Mark my words, you will hear it until you are sick. I was told last week that DirecWay would have to reduce the latency to less than 500ms for Vonage to work. Once I pointed out that the satellite would have to be brought into a low earth orbit to acheive that he sent it back up to higher level support.

You don't have sufficient upload bandwidth

This is the one they use when I tell them that my inbound calls are fine, but my outbound ones are jittery on the sending side only. I had two different techs tell met that was due to the fact that when I call out, I am using more bandwidth. I pointed out that duplex telephone conversations require the same amount of uplink and downlink bandwidth no matter who called who...we are both talking in both cases. That got me sent back to "Higher level support" too. If they try this one on you, go to SpeakEasy.net and run the bandwidth test. If you have more than 90K up then you have enough.

And the final last hope of the baffled tech:

We can't provide support for satellite service.

Obviously.

In all fairness I have been working with a Vonage tech who is very knowledgable and has not once attempted to give me the same old nonsense explainations of why my service doesn't work. So this isn't over.

My point in all of this is to let you know that if (and when) you do have problems, it is a fight to get anyone to do anything about it. Your ISP blames Vonage and Vonage blames your ISP. The "S" word (Satellite) is a customer service killer.

I'd test the sat connection first using www.testyourvoip.com to Boston if you can.

As mentioned before, you'll get a 1/2 second delay, no matter what. Speed of light dictates that, unless your sat provider is using tachyon emissions over subspace. Wink

But if your ISP's base station is outside the US, you THEN have Internet routing from base station to the Voip gateway, which is more than likely in the US (I'm assuming you want a US number to have overseas). That's not gonna paint a prettier picture.

At BEST, you may get wonderfully clear voice with a 1 second round trip delay. Get used to saying "over" at the end of each sentence.

But, heck, if the call is free or dirt cheap, that's not too bad. Back in the early days of dialup Internet. I used to talk to my brother in Alaska using NetMeeting (yes, it was actual Voip over a dialup connection. Oh, the horror! Back then, we used to walk to school three miles. In a snowstorm. Uphill. Both ways.). The calls were terrible quality, but a call the Alaska cost some serious coin back then, so something was better than nothing.

Or you may have a 3 second delay with a lot of "please repeat. over." in the conversation.
