Hello everyone, first off I'd like to say hi to everyone as I'm new to the site.
Voip is very new to me and my IT expertise are basic at best. I apologise in adavnce if my question is familiar and has been answered on the site previously.
I have a Netgear DG834G connecting me to a Pipex ADSL service. As i am sure you are aware the above Netgear piece of kit is a combined router/modem, it is my only way of connecting to the web. I am aware that Vonage prefer a modem -> Vonage box -> router configuration however, having read that many people connect the Vonage supplied linksys RT31P2 to their Netgear DG834G I had hoped this would not prove to be a problem.
Anyway...
I have connected the Linksys box to my Netgear router, as instructed in the setup procedure. The internet light on the front of the Linksys box blinks i time with the correspondng light on the Netgear box. However, the Netgear router seems unable to recognise the presence of the Linksys box. I have unsuccessfully attempted to configure the firewall as the Netgear box repeatedly states that the assigned IP address for the Linksys box (192.168.15.1) is illegal. I have been on the Vonage website and configured the SIP, NTP, TFTP, DNS & RTP ports as it states but to no avail.
Am i missing something fundamental? Am i right thinking it is possible to use Vonage with my setup? Is there somebody with my setup who could tell me how they have configured their Netgear box?
Many thanks for any help with this. |

Sounds like you have connected the cable between the 'LAN' ports on each box. You need to connected from 'LAN' on the Netgear to 'Internet' (or WAN) on the Linksys.
P.s. I'd also recommend you just use the Netgear router as a Modem. In other words, don't connect anything else to it but the Linksys. Then connect all your other PCs etc to the Linksys. Use extra switches if you need more connections than it has. This way you can make use of the QOS facility on the Linksys. Without it you'll get choppy phone calls when using the Internet.
