I signed up for a toll free number recently with the expectation that friends and family in Trinidad can call. It seems however that they cannot get thru to the 1-866 toll free number I have. Any idea why this will happen? Could it be that the local telco company in Trinidad is preventing those calls to be made? If that is the case, why is Vonage misrepresenting the feature?

I am sorry, but it is very clear here: Vonage Toll Free Plus "...allows your incoming caller to call you at no charge from anywhere in the US..."

No where do I see Trinidad represented so I fail to see how this is "Vonage misrepresenting the feature"

I am referring to this link:

Toll Free Link

Incoming calls from anywhere in the USA and territories in the NANP* are free for the caller.

Non-US callers can call Vonage Toll-Free numbers as long as they are calling from a NANP area.
The NANP is the numbering plan for the Public Switched Telephone Network in the United States and its territories, Canada, Bermuda, and many Caribbean nations, including Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks & Caicos.
NANP numbers are ten digits in length, and they are in the format: NXX-NXX-XXXX

I stand so corrected. That is new. What happens when they dial the number?

By the time my friends dialled the numbers 1-8-6-6, they will hear a ring which continues. I believe the local telco number is indeed blocking the toll free numbers because they want to gain as much money as possible from Long distance calls.

The problem is I sent an email to Vonage to enquire about their statement prior to signing up for the toll free number. No one ever responded. Really poor I must say.

Vonage should at least put an amendment to their page indicating this. I for one will be cancelling the Toll free number and asking for reimbursement.

Other than that, I am still happy with the overall service.

That the telco right now is blocking the number is a speculation. A good one I might add but a speculation. Is TTST the only telco there? What if a cellular phone is tried?

EDIT-Also, after reading it a few times, I wonder if they mean that the toll free number is accessible if it is a NANP area, and they are listing the areas. But just because it is a NANP area doesn't mean the local telco HAS to allow it.

Can they call other US based toll free numbers?

We're in the Bahamas and use Vonage actively. I saw that statement before about Vonage toll-free working in all NANP areas. That's clearly not true. The non-U.S. parts of NANP areas do not pass toll free numbers into the U.S. unless they are special lines that have arangements with the originating country.
