1.Your location : New Holland, PA
2. Your ISP name and type : Comcast Cable
3. Upload and download speeds : 6 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up
4. Modem make and model : Motorola SB5100
5. Type of Vonage adapter used : RTP300, fw 1.00.55
6. Setup of Network : Modem --> RTP300 --> 10/100/1000 Switch --> PC's
7. Issue you are experiencing:

It seems like every night the router goes screwy. During the day all is well but overnight some demons attack the router or something. When I come into the office in the morning quite often the internet is only working intermittenly. The router isn't rebooting itself but the internet connection keeps dropping in and out. I can tell this because my Skype and IM programs keep on disconnecting and reconnecting. If I unplug the RTP300 and plug it back in then all is well for the whole day but the next morning when I come in this is happening again.

I'm also having problems with people sending in faxes overnight. We have technicians that fax in work orders every night, usually between 10 - 40 pages. Sometimes everything works ok but sometimes they'll only be able to fax in half of their work because the phone line cuts out. Sometimes they can call right back in and transmit another 5 or 6 pages before the line cuts out again but sometimes the line is just dead until I power cycle the router in the morning. This is the really frustrating part because we absolutely need to have a solid phone connection 24/7 so that these technicians can send in their work. Our business depends on it.

What can I do to get my router to remain functional 24/7 and not drop its connection like it has been doing? Is there a better, more stable, Vonage adapter that can be used? Can the RTP300 be made to work properly?

Thanks.

I Have EXACTLY the same problem as demnos, everything is working when I go to bed, but in the morning my connection almost non existent. The phone still works, but I cant connect to any web pages. I power cycle the RTP300 and all is well (until the next morning) This only started about 2 weeks ago (I've had Vonage for about 2 months) and is quickly becoming very irritating. I am positive that the problem is not with the modem or computers.

Bump? What kind of response is that? Can anyone offer any help on this issue? Thanks.

Just on a side note: is it possible to remotely reboot this router? By remote I mean from the other side of the office building. Right now every time this problem starts I have to run to the server room and power cycle the router. Is there a way to remotely issue a reset? I can't find this option in the router setup anywhere.

Please go to www.testmyvoip.com and post the detailed test results to/from Boston. Going to a mechanic and telling him "my car doesn't work" doesn't help him solve the problem. My guess on this problem is that it's Comcast either doing maintenance at night and taking things offline, or some bozo running BItTorrent or other peer-to-peer file sharing program. Since you said that it's in an office building, it could be one of your neighbors is backing up their server over the internet, especially if they share the connection with you.

I should be able to backup every machine in my office over the internet if I want to. The router should be able to handle 10mbps or 100mbps traffic shouldn't it? There is also far more internet traffic during the day then there would be at night anyway and it works fine during the day. It isn't the traffic amount that is causing these errors.

Well, if all of the bandwidth is in use by computers backing up via 'net, there won't be enough reliable bandwidth left for Voip. That's where I was going with that.

I was looking over the router logs of one of my offices that has a Comcast 8M/768k connection and indeed, it's been offline sporadically between 2am-5am. I use a program called ServersAlive (www.woodstone.nu) that keeps track of the uptime for various systems, but can be configured to keep track of the connection as well. Relatively easy to set up, has a nice little webserver which displays how long the devices have been running without a problem, and can keep logs. If you're more technically adept, there's Big Brother (www.bb4.org) which is absolutely fantastic, but don't expect to have it running in 5 minutes.

So, most likely is a Comcast issue, call 'em up and complain. I've dealt with Comcast tech support numerous times... good luck, 'though their "corporate" tech support is better to work with than their residential techs.
