Anyone else out there that has tried the public vpn ans found it works to get around the block?
I am in Dubai also.

And as I see it, if i sign up with this publicvpn site, i jsut create a virtual vpn on my pc???? Do i need to change any settings on my router/ modem or Vonage box?

To get Vonage to run through PublicVPN you will either have to run Vonage through your computer (somewhat complicated), or get a router (somewhat expensive) that will connect to a VPN endpoint.

I would like some help on how to configure a laptop to allow a Vonage PAP2 connected to the Ethernet port to work when the computer is connected to a VPN. The computer uses Cisco Thin Client VPN software.

I think that would be difficult, Skype might work well that way. It seems that if you live in the expat areas where you have the DIC provider, you can call them and get a puplic IP address for a flat rate of dhs300 and it is suposed to open the ports needed.

Cisco claims you can't do this;

Quote:
Q. Can the Cisco VPN Client work with Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) installed on the same machine?

A. No, the Cisco VPN 3000 Client is not compatible with Microsoft ICS on the same machine. You must uninstall ICS before you can install the VPN Client. Refer to Disabling ICS when Preparing to Install or Upgrade to Cisco VPN Client 3.5.x on Microsoft Windows XP for more information.

Although having the VPN Client and ICS on the same PC does not work, this arrangement does work.

This article, Remote Access VPN and a Twist on the Danges of Split Tunneling has an explanation on why.

I am not entirely convinced you could not make this work, for example by enabling split tunneling and disabling the VPN firewall software, but I don't have the resources to actually figure it out. Additionally, depending on why the VPN exists, this might be a very bad idea from a security point of view.

So the best way to do this would be to get a VPN Endpoint such as the Draytek 2800 VG, and have everything past the router be on the same VPN tunnel? The PAP2 would then not know the difference?

The device you mentioned is more than just a VPN endpoint. Although it is a VPN endpoint it is also an ADSL router and has embedded Voip support (not compatible with primary Vonage service?).

Is there a reason you chose this product instead? The most important feature is that it is compatible with your VPN server.

EDIT: I just want to clarify here that I believe that blocking of Voip in Qatar is a business decision by qtel and not a governmental regulation. This distinction is important because the new Vonage terms of service do not support the use of technology to bypass blocking when such action would be illegal.

Maybe with another client, but definitely not Cisco's. You can't even install the client if ICS is enabled.

HI all,

Can someone post instructions on how to configure a router for VPN? Or, whom should I consult to figure out how to do this? We're leaving for the Gulf in two weeks and I'm trying to get this sorted out before we leave.

Thank you in advance for your advice.
