Those of you who want to get a VPN can use publicvpn.com. The details of how to set up step by step with illustrations and also how to subscribe is available in the following site:

Ofcourse it is a bit atrocious to make some money (a small amount might still be OK but certainly not $100)from others troubles, unless it is a proprietary software developed.

Why doesn't vonage use the vpn to their servers?? Excuse my ignorance.

Thanks for that link... that service along with a linksys VPN router I think should do the trick in case it has truely been blocked for my fiance in dubai

medstudent - If you have a good internet connection you can also create create your own VPN service, so your fiance connects through your connection. If you do end up having to go the VPN route you may want to try your own first.

thanks a lot! I have roadrunner Cable internet and the connection is very good but I am also running VOIP at my home as well in the states, so I think for $5 publicvpn would be good so things dont get mixed up, to create my own VPN would I need to contact time warner?!? Also do you know if any special settings need to be changed on the pap2 adapters to enable them to work via vpn or will they work once the router/connection has been configured?

You have mentioned my home and States. Are you residing in Qatar and are talking to your friend in Dubai through Vonage?
As Arcking has mentioned you can have your own VPN. Your friend can connect through your computer to the Vonage, provided your ISP is not blocking the VOIP. Most of the ADSL provides in the Arabian Gulf are blocking or giving the VOIP a low priority and if the traffic is high the voice get garbled and would not be that clear. In Qatar the service provider QTEL had blocked for quite some time in Dec 2005 till Feb end 2006. Then they released but the upload rate was only 96kb/s and the sound quality used to be very poor. Only of late it has become better, provided we use it during the early hours or late night when the traffic is low. We had this problem for quite some time right from March 2006.

QTEL is supposed to be coming out with dedicated line for the internet, telephone and their Cable vision. Presently they have introduced in the township of Dhukhan on a trial basis. Hopefully that would solve our problems.

I would be moving in the Middle of July to Abudhabi for about six months. Hopefully Etisalat has not blocked the VOIP.

I reside in Charlotte, North Carolina and my fiance lives in Dubai, everything was fine until yesterday and I believe Etisalat has cut off VOIP as her vonage and her friends vonage in dubai got cut and never really came back. I talked to Linksys tech support and was recommended this VPN router http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416826120&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper to do the job I want. I am not sure about how to create my own "VPN" through my ISP (Road Runner Cable) so I might use www.publicvpn.com afterwards I will get online with linksys tech support and configure the router to that VPN and hopefully everything will work as planned. Using Wireless-G VPN Broadband Router, You don't require public vpn provider. You can use your Linksys Unit as a VPN end point. As mentioned in the features you can securely connect remote or traveling users to your network via VPN. Normally these are used by small business houses.
In your case if you are installing this unit you will be the VPN endpoint and Your Finace and her friends in Dubai would be the remote users. You should be able to configure with the help of the Linksys manual and if you face any difficulty you can take the help of linksys tech personnel services through their help desk. It is not all that difficult. You will get to know.
You can view all other Linksys products which are wireless and the different features at this site, it is a pdf file you can save it for your liesure reading.

thanks so much for your help! with this setup my current belkin router would be in charlotte, NC and the new Linksys WRV54G would be in Dubai, is that correct or do I need 2 VPN routers, one here and one in Dubai in order to make the VPN tunnel work?

Anyone else out there that has tried the public vpn ans found it works to get around the block?
I am in Dubai also.

And as I see it, if i sign up with this publicvpn site, i jsut create a virtual vpn on my pc???? Do i need to change any settings on my router/ modem or vonage box?
