Post subject: LinkSys RTP300?
Hello every1,
Gratitudes to all for posting such a wonderful tips & tricks on this web site. However, I have a question if anyone can answer it, I'll really appreciate that.
Does anyone in Qatar have LinkSys RTP300 device? If do, is this working there? I am thinking of swapping this device with my family there with their Motorola device -- that isn't working.
Many thanks in advance for any tidbits.
Thanks.

I have a Linksys RTP300 and it's working perfectly. I haven't had any problems making or recieving any calls.

Another question: Any idea if mailing an electronic device (
VoIP
) there from the US is illegal and would be usurped. Any advice on do's and don'ts...

Dear HateMonply.... (^_*)
I have checked with Fedex they are saying regarding the shipping of such electronic device from any other country you need the approval from Qtel
frequency department & if they approve
( keep in mind its a BIG IF ) then only you will be able to get it. But in our case it seems to be beyond impossible.
Now tell me what can we do about this one??
Its the only TELECOMM over here....

Post subject: There are alternative technical solutions
All -
I have been using a non-
Vonage
service for 2 years. I use
Vonage
at another office outside Qatar. When SIP was blocked, we did some investigation, and realized that the Qtel is causing significant packet loss on UDC traffic along with blocking common SIP ports.
The solution was to tunnel
VoIP
via TCP (which causes an extremely small voice quality loss at times), with the help of another smaller provider. Life have been good since this was put in place (although the PC needs to be up and running the tunneling software while calls are being made or recieved). Using the G729a codec which needs very little bandwidth, the quality is fine even with tunneling.

Qtel denies censoring voice chat; blames it on snag
Web posted at: 12/28/2005 2:51:16
Source ::: The Peninsula
DOHA: Qatar Telecom has not censored Voice Over Internet Protocol (
VoIP
) or what are commonly called PC-to-PC and PC-to-Phone calls, a senior official at the company, said here yesterday. He blamed snags in
VoIP
technology, unscrupulous usage and upgrade of Qtel's Internet infrastructure for the brief outages that users experience.
Khalil Ebrahim Al Emadi, Executive Director, Wireline Services, Qtel, in a statement issued to the local media yesterday said, the company's Internet services were operating to their optimum efficiency and the subscriber base was growing steadily.
“
VoIP
has been operational since the launch of our Internet service, especially the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), offered under the BarQ brand and none of the sites that provide voice services, such as 'Messengers' and other similar ones have been interrupted," he added.
“Qtel has recently undertaken some work to upgrade its Internet network and software in order to increase its capacity, introduce new services and improve quality. This work has affected
VoIP
but we became aware of the issue and started to address the problem. As a result, noticeable improvements in quality and service will be apparent in the next few days," he added.
Khalil Ebrahim pointed out that
VoIP
technology itself was in its early stages of development and hence, the service level wildly fluctuates sometimes between good to poor, especially if in heavy use. “This may lead some to believe that the service has been cut off and it is possible for any person to access those sites to verify, though we are mainly responsible for data transmission on the Internet and not voice," he added.
The official said, some individuals were illegally offering
VoIP
services to other individuals for pecuniary gains, which also caused a jam on the bandwidth, causing legitimate users to suffer. Khalil Ebrahim emphasised the rates charged by Qtel for its BarQ service were lower and comparable to prices of those in the region.
