I just cancelled my Vonage accout in the 1st month. My expectations in regards to replacing my land line were just too high. Losing 20% of the calls I made/recieved was the kicker.
Thanks to this forum for the help. And for those who read this, I can say:
1. Vonage CS is not as bad as people make it out to be. The only bad experience is tech support being overseas.
2. The technology involving Voip and ISP reliability isn't there yet, at least for my area (rural Indiana).
3. I will be following Voip closely, and may dive back in the future.
BTW, the Vonage CS rep told me that Vonage is being bought out by Comcast (my ISP lol). That does not bode well for Vonage customers, as Comcast is a royal pain in the ass IMO.
Peace. |

Dead serious on this. Whether she was fibbing in her sales pitch to keep my account is another matter. She also talked a LOT about other ISP's/backbones messing with Voip (i.e. sabotge). Strange to hear those stories from someone who wants to sell Vontage. |

Not Vontage!!!
The rumors of ISP's doing things to impede Vonage, as far as I am concerned are true - Some problems I have seen defy any other explanation. For example, a customer has super slow internet speeds behind a Vonage router. direct to cable modem the speeds shoot back up. OK, maybe a bad router. Upgrade the device and you get the same problem. Clone the MAC and the problem goes away. Other ISP's like Clearwire straight up tell you they are blocking Vonage, tell the customer that we need to move our device to another port base. OK, we do that, using the ports they specified, and the device still won't register. Customer takes the device to his cousin's house who has another ISP and it works instantly.
I spoke to a customer today whose ISP was offering a Voip service that would essentially prioritize their brand of Voip traffic over their pipes. I told him that what was unsaid was that this would DE-prioritize our traffic and any other Voip competitor.
BTW Kev thats a great pic...choreboy and all! |

Voip is ready. For whatever reason, some times it just doesn't work well with Vonage. Time Warner's digital phone service works like a charm. But you pay for the service, at $40 per month, you get their local customer service and send a truck to your house if you have a problem. However, like Roadrunner (which runs like a well oiled machine now), digital phone is having less and less problems. Time Warner just signed up its 1,000,000 customer at $40 price tier and growing.
I have the $14.95 plan with Vonage. It's working well now, but let me tell you it took some serious patience. I still have to say that Vonage is not for the average Joe who thinks he can just plug in and play. Not yet. |

The average Joe should do some research on their ISP first I think. But Comcast is already pushing their own digital phone service, so I would be dumbstruck is there was even .000069% of truth in the statement the rep made. |

The Comcast Digital Voice is not at all widespread as of yet. I heard there were beta tests done about 6 months ago around Philadelphia and Chicago, but that was it. I periodically check to see if it available in my area, but no go so far. I would consider switching to them, IF, the price and features offered were comparable or better than Vonage. For now though, Vontage is my chariot. |
