PostPosted: Wed Dec 07, 2005 4:01 pm    Post subject: Dial Up Modem Reply with quote Back to top

If this is not the correct place to post this question, please tell me.

I got Vonage under the assumption I can connect it and use a 2400 Boca modem (yes, 2400) and a 56k Hayes Accura modem to dial into sites. I have RoadRunner cable 8M DOWN and 500+k UP.

My problem is that I can not dial into ANY sites without receiving trash on screen (Procomm) and constant disconnects and download cancellations. I am unable to get any work done.

I have moved the Linksys PAP2 Device from any other piece of equipment. The modems are away from it as well. I still get failed connections, cancelled downloads, and garbage on my screen that prevents me from doing anything.

The 56k modems can not even establish a connection.

This has been going on for weeks. I am ready to cancel. I have called tech support and someone tried sometime on my service but it did not help. I have tried 4 modems, moving everything form one room to another, and everything still fails. I have connected the adapter without my router. I tried a different adapter. NOTHING!

I have also turned off and unplugged all other electrical equipment in the room except for 1 PC, the cable modem, and the adapter. No help.

Any ideas? Please! I need to get this working.

You are going to have issues with the 56K modem, if you cap the speeds you will probably be able to make connects at 14.4 or possibly even 28.8.

You need to be using the highest quality setting under bandwidth saver and it may help to have Vonage adjust your packet size.

You should ensure that your Internet connection is not an additional source of trouble by running the tests at http://testyourvoip.com The quality of your voice calls should also be an indication of how successful you will be with analog modems.

"You need to be using the highest quality setting under bandwidth saver...."
Since last night it is.

"....and it may help to have Vonage adjust your packet size."
Any suggesstions as to what size?

"You should ensure that your Internet connection is not an additional source of trouble by running the tests at http://testyourvoip.com."
This test keeps failing no matter what I tried on their site.

I go to http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test.html and it gives me an average of 3Mbps DOWN and 440kbps. Funny when I have other websites telling me 7-8Mbps, but I guess that is just for regualr speed tests. I know very little on Voip stuff so maybe the 3M is normal.

Here is the 10th time doing that test:
Download 3,090,336 bps
Upload 473,528 bps
QOS 85%
RTT 56 ms
MaxPause 47 ms

As for modem speeds, I just want to be able to connect error free. I just want to be able to download and upload files at any speeds between 2400-19200bps without being dumped off. Just as I used to back at the office.

My setup is cable modem to router, Linksys Adapter to router, modem to Linksys. I have tried removing the router to no avail.

That's disturbing. What kind of error messages are you getting? Have you tried it with the Vonage adapter (and everything else) removed from your system and your computer plugged directly into the modem?

Funny, any error messages?

Your QOS is a little low but the other test would provide better information.
