We are new Vonage customers and for the most part enjoy our service. However, at different times our phone calls become so choppy that we can no longer continue our conversation and are forced to hang up. Those who we are speaking too say we sound fine and they don't hear any choppiness, but it's so bad on our end that we can't use the phone. If someone could please help us resolve this, we'd greatly appreciate it as we would like to use our phone. Smile Thanks

I'm using Comcast in Colorado and I am having the same problem. Can you call them back and it sounds fine? I'm convinced this is a Vonage issue and not a Comcast issue.

No, we have not tried calling them back. We'll try that, thanks for the suggestion. I'm glad to hear that we aren't the only ones having the same trouble. It really is frustrating trying to have a conversation when you can't understand anything they are saying.

Thanks again!

Apparently this is a big problem for Vonage right now. I've had this same problem for the past month or so.

Vonage says it is related to a "hop" somewhere in the routing of traffic on the internet, and only appears to occur to folks with Comcast in the West (generally in the evening) with incoming calls.

You should call Vonage and log the issue with them - they are tracking the issue and developing a workaround now...

From my email today: (excerpt)

"Lately we have seen a large increase with inbound calling issues report for choppy garbled audio. This was mainly report by west coast Comcast customers. We have located a pattern with certain hops on the internet in the evening hours to these customers.

Earlier today, Net. Eng. changed the way we broadcast the routes from the denver and san jose POPs. Please be on the look out for any choppy or garbled audio issues specifically for west coast Comcast customers."

it's not a "Vonage problem". I can't control Comcast's network or their routes, or their peering arrangements. (Or can I...) But thanks for being quick to point fingers.

ColdGin,

Question for you. How does Vonage handle their outbound calls. Once the Voip packets leave my phone adapter, do they go to a central voice switch and then get handed off to a phone line and a call is made (whether local or long distance) OR are my Voip packets routed over the Internet to the nearest VOIP-to-phone line switch based on wherever I'm calling and then converted over to a phone line and the call is made? The reason I'm asking is because I keep having problems with making calls out to family in Montana. If we call our audio is very garbled and choppy, but if they call us, our audio is clear and just fine. It seems to be intermittent (better at times) and I'm running the fastest speeds available with Comcast (8M/768K) and I'm not running any other network services while talking on the phone (surfing the net, etc.).

I'm on Comcast in LA and I experience the same thing. However I have two routers, the RPT300 for home, and the RT31P2 for work. This only happens on the RPT300, I don't have this issue on the other router.
