I've been looking at Vonage for quite some time, and now I'm ready to sign up. Other than price, is there a particular reason to choose one phone adapter over another? I'm currently using a WRT54G router, but I'm connected via ethernet rather than wireless, so wired vs wireless isn't a real concern right now either. I guess I'm looking for performance suggestions if anybody has any. Thanks.

Hold onto that 54G! Also, could you tell us what firmware and version your router is? Currently, I run a

Surfboard Modem->

WRT-54G v4->

RTP31P2 (Vonage Adapter)

I have seen no problems, great QOS, and using Linksys Firmware. I recommend against letting the Vonage Adapter being your gateway to the Internet. Letting the Vonage device only do Voip is better than loading up with lots of www and such.

I use the PAP2 with the WRT54G (Version 4) and it works great. This is a 'retail' only solution, so you buy it at BB, CC, Staples, etc and just plug it in (after setting up an account online). Instead of getting the router/adapter combo and disabling the router functions, the PAP2 is an adapter only that you can use with any router, and the WRT54 is a good choice in general.

Frankly, I'd get the simplest Vonage adapter you can get. Don't bother with the RTP300 or WRTP54G. I *have* a WRTP54G, and last week I finally gave up, bought a WRT54G, loaded HyperWRT on it, and put it in front of my WRTP54G.

Now, if you were building a network from scratch, and had no intentions of using BitTorrent or any "heavy load" applications, then I'd say the WRTP54G is fine, and I'd assume the same is true of the RTP300. But the WRTP54G (like the WRT54G with native Linksys firmware) has problems with BitTorrent. The big difference is that the WRTP54G cannot take any aftermarket firmware and Vonage can and will push new firmware to you at their whim.

Comcast Thomson Modem->

WRT54G v1.1 (Firmware 4.20.6)

I assume that you mean I should use the Vonage Adapter from one of the ethernet ports on the router. Sorry, I'm not as up to speed as I'd like to be, but I'm working on it.

Thanks to the others as well...I've got to go now, but I'll check back later.

Go for the RTP300. If you call up and order on the phone make sure what device you are getting, they will just send you an MTA if you don't speak up.

"MTA's and ATA's are the main thing holding back ACR."

A bit of a thread highjack here, but are we really to believe that because not every subscriber has equipment that supports ACR that those who do can't have it? That makes about as much sense as saying I can't have Tone dialing because there are still Rotary/Pulse dial phones in use.

Probably more of a "if we offer it, everyone with old gear will scream, and it will cost many thousands of dollars to swap out all that old junk.

Wink

Linksys was kind enough to release the source code for their firmware (which is actually a customized Linux) as GPL. So, of course, a series of modders have built many, many third party firmware versions for the WRT54G series. Except for the newest WRT54G, the V5, which they stripped down the memory and put a closed operating system on.
