PostPosted: Tue Dec 06, 2005 1:43 pm    Post subject: Echo problem, but only on international calls! Reply with quote Back to top

I am a new subscriber (2 days old). I do like the service, however, when placing international calls to France I can hear my echo. The other side, doesn't.

I tried local calls, and they work fine without any echo problem.

Here my setup:
Linksys WRT54GS Firmware 4.70.6
Vtech IP8100-2
Cable provider Comcast

My Bandwidth Saver is set to 90Kpbs

Here the testoverip stats (to/from London) (they don't offer France):

To London
MOS 3.5/5.0
Round-Trip Latency 276 ms
Packet Discards 3.3%

From London
MOS 3.3/5.0
Round-Trip Latency 276ms
Packet Discards 3.4%

Any ideas what I could do next? Should I call Comcast (shiver) and have them debug the modem?

Unfortunately I need this to work, otherwise the service is not useable for me.

Any help appreciated!

P.S. I did try the different suggestions here on the board to reduce the volume of the phones, but that didn't help. Thus far, I haven't called Vonage CS.

Echo is typically caused by latency. Your connection looks pretty good, however it looks like a latency issue.

Change Bandwidth to 50k , then 30k, re-test and post results.

Thanks for the tip! Setting it to 50 fixed the problem. (Honestly, I'm not clear on why less bandwidth is preferable in any situation, but never change a working system, right? I have to read up on them latencies a bit...)

Personally I'd disagree that your connection is 'good'. Possibly 'ok-ish' but not good. A latency of 276ms in my personal experience is noticeable. Ideally you need to get (well) down below 200ms. 276ms is of course a quarter second.... Having said that, the latency issue doesn't necessarily mean your ISP is the problem - they can't control latency introduced elsewhere on the Internet, only on their connection to it. I've seen the latency on my connections vary hugely according to how Vonage route specific calls. For example, if Vonage route my call via some very distant Internet location their is always latency. Just jumping the Atlantic adds around 90ms for a start! I think they might have changed some things though since it does seem to have improved recently. One option for debuging latency is to find out where your Vonage adapter is connecting to then run traceroute (tracert on windows). That will tell you the individual hops that your data makes getting to its destination and how much latency (delay) is introduced by each of them. If its an ISP or LAN problem you'll see lots of delay on the initial hops. If its a general Internet problem you'll see latency building up on the later hops.

How is your Vonage adapter connected to your Internet connection? i.e. what other routers etc do you have and how are they connected. Do you have QOS configured?

One day I was bored and was calling random puerto rico telephone numbers to see if anyone speaks english. I noticed the garbled voice problem calling there. I have no issues with calls to USA/Canada. I would imagine that Vonage international calls suck. You could always buy an international calling card and then dial the 800 access number for your international calls. The price would probley be the same as Vonage and because your dialing a domestic 800 # the quality should be great.

Thanks for all the tips. I was using the 1010502 number through my landline to place long distance calls. But those are deemed invalid through Vonage. At least that's the message I hear when I tried it.
There is probably a good reason for it (yes?)

So either the latency problem is gone for good, or I would need to use a 1-800 number. However, these are usually more expensive than the 1010 numbers. Vonage's international rates do seem very competitive.

I'll see how it goes this week. But this particular thread is not increasing my confidence in the international service: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic5520.html
Now the last entry in the thread was from July 2005. Maybe it has improved since then.

10-10 numbers are called "dial-around" numbers, since you are dialing around the normal long distance carrier to a cheaper one. (Ex 10-10-987 for nationwide calling). Since Vonage would not get paid for this when used, I can see why they block it.
