Excerpt from Actual LNP Email Received 3/5/04:
"I am contacting you in regards to your number transfer. The number transfer process takes a minimum of 20 business days (excluding weekends), an estimated 4 weeks for the process to be fully completed...The process of keeping our service active and your current carrier active paying for the two service is a sacrifice that has to be made if you want to keep your telephone number."
This is absolutely ridiculous. It is apparently OUR fault that don't want to pay two telephone bills for two months, while waiting for the PRIVILEGE of having Vonage transfer our number, as is our LEGAL RIGHT under the FCC's guidelines. The worst part is that they refuse to provide any type of date or information for pending transfers. You are left twisiting in the wind for weeks wondering when your number will be ported.
I am making it my mission to write as many complaint emails as I possibly can to LNP until my number is successfully transferred. Maybe I will accomplish nothing, but I have read enough posts from other people experiencing 4-6 week transfers that I feel like some action is necessary.
I encourage anyone who is experiencing a similar delay in their transfer to join me in complaining to LNP on a daily basis. If nothing else, we will annoy them as much as they have annoyed us. I have written five emails in four days and intend to continue every day from here on out. I have never hated anything before in my life, but I truly despise LNP.
Viva la revolution! |

Please if your porting period is taking TOO long, complain formally (meaning only the facts, no emotion) to the FCC website. Stats are gathered and often make it ways to the top regulators.
30 days should be the worse case.
LNP should be a fairly quick process - but it hampered on a couple fronts - first your local telephone company purposely introduces steps to "ensure" quality service, second the lowly person at the telephone company who processes the paperwork knows this is a customer leaving and one less customer is tipping the scales to their job security. So no big surprise they often move very very slowly (often with their supervisor looking on).
Finally, there is a bit of technical element that you DO want done right. Done wrong and you're phone DON'T ring.
Only under the threat of death does your local telephone company move. Only by complaining in a rational manner with factual information will progress be made.
BTW .... Michael Powell at the FCC 'gets it' - he recognizes that changes is upon us AND also knows that change will benefit the American consumer (despite the misgivings of the established operators). |

This is really incredible. When I ported my cell phone number from AT&T to Verizon back at the end of November, it was almost instantaneous. By the time I received my Verizon phone in the mail (a few days), the port had taken place. |

I just wrote a letter to the FCC and copied Vonage and Verizon. This thread contains all the necessary addresses and required information to draft an effective complaint. Boy did that feel good! I will keep everyone posted to see if I can get a response out of them.
