When ever I'm on the phone I loss internet connectivity (or it is so slow everything times out). I've tried manage my bandwidth but to no avail. When I'm off the call, the internet will seem to reset itself (takes a second or two) and then acts as normal.

Configuration is:
Sprint DSL Modem -> Linksys WRT54G -> Linksys WRTP54G

I originally had the Voice Router in front of the other router but my internet connection to the internet was very slow through the "P" router so I change it around (realizing I have given the internet priority).

In any event has anyone else experience this problem of lossing the internet when on a phone call?

Do you have voice QoS enabled on your router? What version FW are you using on both devices?

I don't think I have QoS on the router (can't find it, maybe a FW issue??).

On my WRT54G I'm running FW 3.03.9
On the WRTP54G it is running FW 1.00.20

Sounds like something is wrong in your QoS settings.

1. How much upload bandwidth do you have?

- You could just have enough to support Vonage, so the router is (intelligently) clamping down everyone else and respecting your QoS request.
- You can test for this by using the "Bandwidth Saver" and see if it fixes the problem. If it does, then you just have BARELY enough bandwidth to support the full quality Vonage and you have a decision to make - voice quality or simultaneous Internet?

2. How much does your WRT54G *think* you have (what is set in the "upstream bandwidth" field)?

- If you have this set to AUTO, turn that off and set it to about 90% of the actual upstream (based on testing) that you have available. Otherwise, QoS may be flakey, since QoS based on incorrect upload speeds = bad QoS.
- What your ISP tells you it SHOULD be isn't worth squat. Test it using www.dslreports.com/tools and the speed tests here. Do REPEATED tests, at different times of day, and use the lowest number you get on a dedicated connection, minus 10%, for QoS. Experiment from there.

3. Do you have any drops in quality or reports of drops in quality on the other side?

- Again, this would be an indicator of insufficient bandwidth. It could be that the router is giving you 100% of your connection for Voip, and it still isn't quite enough.

4. What version of firmware are you running in your WRT54G? Maybe there's a problem there. HyperWRT Tofu 10 works VERY well for me, but there are lots of excellent third party firmwares (as long as your WRT54G is NOT a V5).

To clarify a bit.

DSL Modem/Router -> WRT54G -> WRTP54G

My DSL Modem is a Prestige 645ME modem+router. My upstream speed is 576kbps (download is 3520kbps).

On the WRT54G I'm running the stock Linksys FW version 3.03.9.
On the WRTP54G the stock FW 1.00.20.

I'm beginning to think that I need to upgrade the firmware on at least the WRTP54G. And maybe upgrade the WRT54G as well (HyperWRT, or something).

Where do I find the WRTP54G firmware updates?

Thanks!

Holy obsolesence, Batman! Wink

Your WRT54G and WRTP54G are both running old firmware. Do you have to chisel your config changes on the stone tablets, or are those revisions after they switched to movable type? (just kidding!).

For the WRT54G, even an uprade to the latest Linksys stock firmware will probably help you out, a lot. Third party firmware is even better (I run HyperWRT Tofu 10, which you can find at www.hyperwrt.org, though be aware that the builds on the main page are OLD, and you want to go to their forums to get the latest). But go with the Linksys stuff first, then get crazy and go "aftermarket" once you find out the stock stuff doesn't work. Stock = warranty. Aftermarket = if something goes bad, your problem.

For WRTP54G, Vonage should be updating that for you. I'd call Customer Service and see if they can push it for you, or there are instructions here on the forums on how to do it yourself, but try the customer service route first. If they do it, and the router goes, err.. "ports up", then they have to replace it.

Thanks! I'm up to 1.00.55 on my WRTP router (which improved some of the phone stuff) but still didn't help with losing the internet. I'll update the WRT router and hopefully that'll do it.

(Although it was interesting that the update for the WRTP failed at the very end because of a user id or something like that. However when I got into the router it said I was at 1.00.55 and it all works).

Well, glad to hear that your WRTP54G got dragged kicking and screaming into the current year. I can't guarantee that a firmware upgrade to your WRT54G will fix all,but it can't hurt. It's the first step toward diganosing the problem, at least.

Now that you're up to date, your Vonage adapter in the P54G should work better, though unfortunately you may have just lost Caller ID (or only have it the first time after a router restart). But such is life, and another firmware upgrade is always around the corner that will fix everything, right? Wink

Well upgrading to the most recent Linksys firmware for my WRT54G (4.20.7) and the latest for my WRTP54G (1.0.55) didn't seem to remedy the problem.

I even udpated QoS to set high priority on all ports except the one the WRTP54G is attached to (set it to low) with no difference.

When ever I'm on a call I can't get out on the WAN to ping, resolve names or anything. As soon as I hang up I'm okay.

I've also tried adjusting my Voip bandwidth to no avail.

Strange.

About the only thing I've got left is some sort of defect in QoS, and trying third party firmware. My WRT54G's been up on HypwerWRT Tofu for about 5 days now, and I haven't had the slightest problem.

Do you have anything special in your configuration? WRTP54G in DMZ, or a bunch of ports forwarded, or anything of that nature?
