1. Can someone more informed let me know whether the DirecTV representative was right in telling me that I need a continuous landline to record shows on the DVR?
From what I have been reading, that does not seem to be true.
I currently have Vonage unlimited over a high-speed Comcast connection and ordered DirecTV DVR, coming on Friday.

2. So there is no way that Vonage can handle the initial setup? I have to take it to someone who has a landline?

3. After the initial setup, according to Vonage, I can set the DVR up for wireless connection (I also have a wireless router in the house). Is this true and how do I go about doing this?

Sorry for the amateurish questions; just a teenager majoring in the social sciences trying to figure out these tech things. Lol

DirecTV claims the need for a phone line for all receivers for two reasons.
  1. Ordering PPV via the remote. PPV charges are transmitted over the phone line. If enough charges are made without a phone call then you can no longer order PPV by remote, you can still order them by phone or via the web.
  2. Sports subscriptions. Blackout areas are determined based on your phone number, supposedly this requires a continuous connection. Obviously this concept is bogus with Vonage.
Additionally TiVo based DVRs need a phone line to make periodic TiVo calls.

You do not need a phone line connected continuously for DVR service either. Periodic connection is sufficient to continue all services. I am able to successfully use Vonage for this purpose.

Only the DVRs with TiVo software require a phone call for the initial setup. The new DVRs (R15) do not use TiVo software and do not require an initial setup call.

Some of the TiVo DVRs support wireless connections many of them also have aftermarket options for network connections. These connections only replace the calls to TiVo and not the calls to DirecTV. A great source for TiVo information is www.tivocommunity.com

Oh ok, cool.

I don't need the PPV and noone watches sports in my house.

How many times do you do periodic updates and for how long?

So I can assume I am getting the R15 DVR since I just placed my order today? They don't give the TIVO DVR's unless there is a special request, right? Or am I just wrong and have to call and check with them.

Ok - I called DirecTV and they revised the workorder to make sure the technician would bring me the R15 DVR for installment.
That way I would have less trouble handling the periodic installments.
Lets see if they get this much right.

The R15 doesn't need a phone line connected for the software updates, and during the initial installation it doesn't even use the phone line. The only thing the R15 needs the phone line for is PPV's, which sound like it would be a really good DVR for you. The TiVo based DVR's do need the phone line for the software updates.
I hope you enjoy your new DVR when you get it.
