PostPosted: Sun Dec 04, 2005 3:25 pm    Post subject: HELP with QOS, etc... Reply with quote Back to top

I have been expierencing problems in Vonage phone conversations whenever I am using my upload bandwidth. This morning I was on a call while sending an email with a 2MB attachment. I heard the person fine but they expierenced my voice being choppy and cutting in and out badly. I have also received feedback from callers on the other end that it periodically cuts in and out when I am not uploading anything, not as bad though as when I am.

I have a Linksys WRT54G and a Linksys Phone Adapter. My internet connection is 4Mbps Down and 384Kbps Up and tests confirm this.

I've heard that setting the QOS of my WRT54G may help. Based on my internet speed what should my settings and values be set at? Is it better to go with device priority or ethernet priority?

Does the bandwidth saver actually work to fix choppiness when talking and uploading? According to Vonage Support the bandwidth saver setting ONLY compensates for people with lower bandwidth. He said with my 384Mbps Up it should be set at 90Kbps and changing this setting will not help my issue.

Any information to optimize my setup for Vonage in anyway would be GREATLY appreciated!!

THANKS

I also have a WRT54G. I haven't been able to get the QoS settings to do anything at all, even with the newest Linksys firmware, 4.20.7. I've purchased a Cisco 871 router so I can really do the QoS I need to smooth things out.

Just for the record, I have the bandwidth saver turned on, and I have since day 1. I may turn it off once I get the 871 installed and working properly. Unfortunately, the bandwidth saver isn't going to do much for the chop if you are using all of your upstream bandwidth. Once it gets pegged at 384k voice traffic is going to have to wait for data traffic to go out. Its a fundamental principle of QoS. The choppiness you described is being caused by this.

You might be able to install a third party firmware on your router, such as Sveasoft's Alchemy or some other firmware that will let you do some real QoS.

until I see some detailed test results with 3rd party firmware, I disagree with the "real qos" comment.
daygo140: there's a setting for "auto". try that first. and use mac address priority.

How much, exactly, is the Kbps required FOR UPLOAD for the best quality. It doesn't specify whether the 90Kbps is up or down. I'll just dedicate that to the "upstream bandwidth"

it's upstream. and that's the wrong idea. you're telling the wrt you have 90kbps of upload speed - total. like I said, use auto. if you aren't happy with it, come back or search for the correct way to set it manually.

Ok thanks!!!

One more thing...

I put the mac ID of the phone adapter in and labeled it Vonage and set the priority to highest.

For ethernet port priority I set all to LOW and disable. Is this correct?

put the mac id in, set it to highest, leave everything else alone (change back to defaults)

change everything you changed back to what they were to begin with. don't change port priorites. just put the mac id in, set it to highest, and leave the rest alone.

You're wasting your time. The QoS functionality on the WRT54G DOES NOT WORK. I have the same router, I already tinkered with all the settings.
