Getting Vonage in a few days, and trying to get a handle on how to setup the Vonage system with my home network. So, if anyone can let me know if this will work, or give tips would be appreciated!
Here is how I would setup the system:
1. Cable Modem ( - Road Runner) 2. Netgear WGT624 Wireless Router (set to receive DHCP from cable ISP). Router is set to hand out DHCP to internal clients 3. Vonage Phone Adapter plugged into one of the ethernet ports on the Netgear Router. 4. Phone into Vonage.
Would this work? Would I need to open a port Netgear? I also have a webserver behind my firewall connected to the outside world. Starting out with the "free" stuff first the Motorala VT1005RB or should I just dive into the Vtech IP8100-2 and ditch my old Uniden analog phone?
Thanks!! |

Thanks for the tip. Makes sense that the phone adapter should go infront of the router, I am assuming that you can configure the mta to pass all data through to the router. I use various ports to gain access to my network from the outside such as VNC, Terminal Server, Web and E-mail.
Of course the Linksys WRTP54G (http://www.vonage.com/device.php?type=WRTP54G&refer_id=233ao315vope3ne135o3) that is listed for $29.99 looks like a good deal and I can get rid of the above problem!!
How long does it take to transfer your current telephone number over and receive calls? Also, I can then assume all you have to do is call AT&T and Southern Bell to cancel your current billing..right?
Thanks.. |

don't put all your eggs in one basket. get a regular linksys wrt54g if you're going to get anything. and don't be surprised if the mta **** for your application. it's a simple device that's made for the everyday person who has a computer and an internet connection...not for someone who is a power user, for lack of a better term. |

Thanks works for me keeping the two items seperate. Just want to make sure there is no lag when the wife is on the phone, surfing, and I'm on another computer doing stuff. Well, guess I'll take the dive into this and see what happens! |

I use the Linksys PAP2 in pretty much that same config (only a Belkin wireless router and Charter cable modem). Works fine. I did set the PAP2 for a static IP address and opened the necessary router ports (I might have been able to leave it as it was though; I did this while troubleshooting and it turned out to be something else entirely).
I do recommend keeping the equipment separate. If you decide to leave Vonage or the equipment breaks, there is no need to replace major parts of the network. |
