Hi there,

Im thinking about ordering FIOS at my parents house and installing a Vonage line there. I didn't have much luck finding the info I would like about the FIOS line. I would like to know if Verizon requires you to keep a phone line with them to have internet over FIOS. Also what taxes do you have to pay for having the FIOS line?

Thanks,
MarleyX

FiOS does not require you to have a landline phone with verizon. You will have to pay by credit card if you have FiOS without a landline. I know in the Tampa, FL market there is no tax on fiber. 39.95 is all you pay here for 5/2 connection. So for FiOS you would pay for instance 39.95 + 27.XX for Vonage total.

I ordered the FIOS, the only option was to bill the FIOS to the phone bill. Once I transfer the number will they take a credit card? Or will they drop the FIOS with the phoneline?

Thanks,

Not really sure how that works. Since you have verizon landline you will probley be getting FiOS for less money then if you didnt have the landline. I think it is usually 5 bux more a month if you dont have the landline. I would assume they would probley ask for a credit card and then raise your fee 5 bucks or so a month. You would have to call and ask I guess.

I can only tell you my unpleasant experience but not sure if this is across the board. I had Verizon local service and DSL in the Philadelphia area. I upgraded to FIOS about a month ago, but still kept my local line so it all worked perfectly and it was all on the same phone bill.

Well, I went to do an LNP and port my number from verizon over to Vonage and what I DID NOT know is that when Verizon receives a disconnect order on your local phone service not only do they disconnect your local service, but they ALSO cancel your FIOS service. This was news to me!!! I just found out this morning (since my disconnect completed today) and I have to wait until tomorrow to reorder my FIOS using credit card as my billing method!

One other note... when I first signed up for FIOS I got a $10 per month discount (came out to $29/mo) since I was upgrading from DSL. Now that I am cancelling my Verizon local service they are removing that discount and I only get the $5 per month discount if I do a one year contract ($34/mo). I am fine with this, but it is just a huge pain to go through the hassle of having the FIOS disconnected and then reordering it again.

They say the reorder process is just a simple "central office connect" and should not involve coming on site (I sure hope not).

I'm crossing my fingers...

They're just beating you down since you cancelled POTS! Seriously, that's some crappy stuff. Since Verizon is virtually a monopoly up here, I guess they figure they can do what they want. Very Happy

Yeah, I was pretty pissed, especially since I can't even use Vonage the first day my number ported. At least I am making good use of call forwarding.

But in their favor, the FIOS support lady I dealt with was really nice and her explanation was "if a customer orders a disconnect on their local service we assume they are moving and we cancel all related services." I would figure they'd want to keep billing me for service even if I DID move and make me call and cancel. Now I wish they did that!
