ok. I tried to do everything by the book and set up my phone modem behind the router and nothing worked. So I decided like a dumbass to try and downgrade my linksys firmware. Big mistake since now I've fried my router and not it won't reset and its completely unresponsive and I can't do anything with it. I don't know if this has happened to anyone else, but be careful when you try to work with your firmware and your router since now I've completely ruined my router.
So basically now I'm fucked and can't do anything until I get another router. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best type of 4 port rounter that can handle Vonage well and still do good with hosting unreal tournament games?
The only reason I got into this is because I'm trying to make Vonage work. When it was outside of me router it would lose the connection to Comcast constantly. So I tried to work the behind the router set up and have totaly burned up expensive hardware I own.
Anyway... suggestions for a good router are appreciated. |

Sorry to hear about your router-frying misfortune. I have a Netgear MR814v2 802.11b router (paid $30 for it after rebate) and Vonage works fine with it, both in front and behind the router (seems to be more stable behind the router though). Don't know about hosting games. |

When you say "behind the router", you mean cable modem > router > ata, right? That works better than cable modem > ata > router? Did you switch it because your internet connection was suffering? They recommend the ata first, don't they? If you put it behind the router, do you open ports, or just DMZ the IP? I have 2 of these set-ups, one in NY, and one in CA. The one in NY gave me so many problems, no matter which way I set it up. I went back and forth with Vonage for weeks, running ping plotter for them and all. Finally, I had to leave and come out to CA. Ironically, the NY set-up seems good now. It looks as though they've upgraded the firmware again (1.14), and I guess that did the trick. The CA set-up has worked perfect from day one, so either it was Optimum Online, or the firmware. Anyway, just wondering what you've found. |

Yes, by "behind the router", I mean cable modem > router > ata. When the ATA was in front of the router, it hung every few days (green light flashing, dead phone, etc.). Since I put it behind the router, it has been stable.
The quality of the voice suffers a little bit, I think, when the ATA is behind the router, even when I don't use the computer. It's still acceptable so I leave it behind the router.
No I did not open ports or do anything special with the router (Netgear MR814v2). I had wanted to but then I could not find instructions from Vonage for my type of router and I did not bother to investigate more since it was working, so why bother. |

Hey, thanks for the reply. I have the same router here, except I have the ATA in front of it. It's been working great for 2 weeks now. However, in NY, I was having the same problem as you, hanging every few days. I guess it depends on the neighborhood traffic. Maybe in NY I was getting more attacks from outside. My SMC router there logged a tremendous amount of SYN flood and other nonsense. Looks like your router is sheilding it from all the noise. |
