I was able to get it to "stick". After programming the new IP, DO NOT RESET IT. Hang the phone up and then relog in to check the IP. I believe thats how I did it. The other thing that seems a bit weird is your statement about the PAP being infront of the router. Unless your modem is a DHCP server and your router is a hub, your approach seems wrong. My impression is the PAP goes after the router but you assign in at IP out of the dynamic range. This won't solve your (our) problem, but it may help us to determine if either of us our doing this wrong...

Thanks for the reply. You are correct about the normal configuration that places the PAP2 on a router port. This configuration works sometimes but results in choppy audio when the network is busy. I was thinking that IF the PAP2 could successfully prioritize its packets over regular traffic, then the audio quality might improve. Since the manual says that placing the PAP2 on a router port (normal configuration) does not provide for QoS, that prompted me to seek an alternative. My wireless ISP is willing to assign the PAP2 a permanent IP address and a separate wireless modem if I can get it to accept a static address, mask and gateway address. That just might work as my ping times to their gateway is a very consistent 7 ms. The QoS activation (if possible with a PAP2) should help improve latency.

BTW, the only reset I've done was at the Vonage tech's suggestion just to see if the static IP would program ok after a reset. It didn't. There is something different if you can disable the DHCP with command 101, set a static IP with cmd 111 and review it with cmd 110. 110 reveals a 0.0.0.0 address is present instead of the stored static IP. I think it is time for me to call the V tech line again and will advise of any updated info. Thanks!

Obviously, having your WISP assign you a complete second connection would be ideal, but you may also put the PAP2 behind a router, IF that router really supports QoS. I have my WRTP54G behind a WRT54G that has working QoS, and Vonage is set with top priority. Other than a 5-10 second startup delay when I first pick up the phone to dial outbound (due to the router figuring out the increased traffic and "reshaping" the traffic), Vonage works PERFECTLY for me, no matter what else I'm doing on my Internet connection.

Other stuff can slow down significantly, of course. But that's the idea.

I run Vonage, two VPN connections, P2P, web surfing, and frequently SameTime desktop sharing, all on one Cable modem connection capped at 256 up / 3000 down. Vonage is cleaner and clearer than a POTS line for me now, after I added the QoS capable router.

Putting the WRTP54G out front made things WORSE. You really, really need QoS to make it work well. Unless, of course, your ISP is willing to give you a whole second connection (as in your case).

Hi,

I have a Modem-cum-router HUAWEI MTA882>PAP2. I have following problems:

1) I have no LED for PHONE1. No dial tone.

2) I tried to use the interactive voice response menu to configure the IP address, subnet mask & gateway IP but till yesterday all was 0.0.0.0 but today I can hear the Static IP correct but the other 2 are still 0.0.0.0. Also when I do the step of manual reboot sometimes the phone adapter reboots even if i don't hang up the phone. I don't hear "Option successful" as per the troubleshooting guide. And even if I hang up the phone as soon as I press 732668# and the phone adapter reboots but I still hear new subnet mask & IP Gateway as 0.0.0.0

What should I do?

Thanks
Anu

You are experiencing about the same thing as I am. I ahve been able to get the IP, subnet and gateway to stick, but it took a while. If I remember correctly, First, I changed the option to enable the static IP, then set the new IP. After confirming the new change, I hung up the phone and unplugeed the router, and PAP for two minutes. Then power up the router. After thats up, power up the PAP. If you check the IP, it should then be correct. I did this for every change ( subnet, and Gateway). I still was unable to get things to work. I don't know what should really be put in the Gateway? DO you?

You can't use the PAP2 with a static IP it's needs NAT to run. Without NAT the pap2 won't connect to the internet. DHCP usually defaultswith NAT. If you know what you are doing you can have a Static IP with NAT. becaus the PAP2 is NOT a router. It needs NAT

tmaxx - the gateway address is your router ip address.

I'm glad it isn't just me having this problem. I'm sure it is firmware related. Unfortunately I can't get Vonage to contact linksys to do anything to fix it.

What is NAT? You say "DHCP usually defaults with NAT." But we have to disable DHCP as per the troubleshooting guide so the question is do we need a NAT?

Thanks
Anu

Someone told me to run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) and you will get ip address, subnet mask, gateway ip.

We have to use those.

Thanks

PostPosted: Fri Dec 23, 2005 12:13 am    Post subject: is this problem due to different ISP & network? Reply with quote Back to top

Well I have a question? I had set up my Vonage account on a different network first and then after activating it Vonage worked that time. Now I am trying to use it on a different ISP and network. Has this problem arised due to this?

Do you think I should use a router in between my modem-cum-router HUAWEI MT882 & PAP2? Will the problem be solved?

I had made first settings on the network Motorola modem>D Link wireless-cum-cable router>PAP2.

Thanks
Anu
