But I've heard from people that if you port your number to Vonage (a voice IP system) you may NOT be able to port it back to a normal phone system like Talk-America and SBC.
It can usually be done, but the process is more difficult. Also, no guarantee. If you got a new number from Vonage to begin with, then it can't be ported at all.
Has anyone ever accepted the Vonage number initially to try the service and then ask to have your number ported? I'm worried Vonage will not work with my faxing needs and wanted to try before giving up my land line number.
I activated my service, indicated I would port my old number, but I guess if you test everything out after activation but before you submit the LOA, you can kill service without affecting your old number.

Yup. I signed up for Vonage back in, oh, May. I then had my POTS number forward all calls to my Vonage number. So I was basically using my Vonage service for both inbound and outbound calling.
After several months I decieded I was comfortable with Vonage and had my POTS line ported over to Vonage.
