To the annoyance that posted above here, with yet ANOTHER negative Voip/Vonage comment: Do you even have Vonage? If not, why the hell are you here? You give crappy advice, you talk down to people that have been here and know how this works. So tell us all, why are you here? |

I am only keeping Vonage on a certain condition. If it wasn't for this I'd cancel it in a second. For your alarm system, just get a POTS line. |

I actually have both. Upon moving into a new house, I brought Vonage with me, but issues with my DirectTivo and Vonage caused me to order a POTS line from the local Bell. I picked the cheapest I could go with ($10/mth + tax) and it runs my alarm, Tivo, fax and it's my power outage backup.
My alarm company would have freaked if they had to try and use Voip - they barely understood that the POTS line for the alarm was NOT the notification line for the house (VoIP).
There are alternatives to $35 POTS bills. Look or ask about metered calling - I get 25 calls a month on my POTS. Like $.08 for each after. I'd have make a LOT of calls to equal $35. |

I also maintain POTS and Vonage, and manage with a 2-line cordless phone system. Our long distance bills were getting out of hand, so the Vonage line only gets used for outgoing long distance or the occasional "wife's on the POTS line so use Line 2". The whole "your number won't be listed in a phone book" and the following statement in the Terms of Service documentation (yes I read every word):
Service Distinctions:
The service is NOT [sic] a telecommunications service and we provide it on a best efforts basis. Important distinctions exist between telecommunications service and the service offering that we provide. The service is subject to different regulatory treatment than telecommunications service. This treatment may limit or otherwise affect your rights of redress before regulatory agencies.
I read that as "enjoy the benefits" and "understand the limitations". So I enjoy the free Long Distance, and mitigate the limitations by maintaining my "FCC regulated" Qwest telephone line. Never give up your rights to litigation |
