I have a reason for using dial up too. I'm simply testing a dial up connection. I just want it to work, plain and simple. I know getting it to work with a winmodem is iffy, but that is what I'm using. I'm also using a PAP2. I regular PAP2 without Vonage firmware has the capbility for high speed data, as I have made successful dialup calls this way, up to 52000bps. Vonage limits voice bandwidth to 90k, am I correct?
If Vonage were to increase this, I would be able to make high speed data calls, wouldn't I?

Voip relies on CODECs to encode the analog voice data into digital packets. It is the specification of the CODEC that determines the bandwidth usage and not a specific cap by Vonage.
There are other factors that Vonage can adjust to improve success with analog devices like modems and fax machines. Specifically they can adjust packet size.
It would be interesting to know what CODEC was in use on your non-Vonage PAP2 that allowed you to make high speed data calls. You should also be aware that the quality of the connection between you and your service provider may have an impact on the speed of calls.
Broadband reports has a post that provides some technical details on the CODECs in use by Vonage. |
