Hi, might be a frequently asked question, but I can't find it anywhere.
Had my Vonage UK line for a couple of months, but for the last couple of weeks have had the line cutting out after maybe 30 seconds of call. No real pattern to the cut off, sometimes works great for as long as the call, other times it seems to have really poor quality voice and then gives up.
What is my first port of call to get this sorted. I've tried the helpdesk before and got really cheesed off with it so was wondering if there was a pool of accumulated knowledge anywhere.

Could be down to you not having QOS or it not behaving correctly. Is your Vonage adapter the first thing connected to your Internet connection?

No it isn't.
I've got a Draytek V2600 router/modem beastie acting as the main link to the ADSL connection with the freebie box that Vonage throw out plugged into the house network.
I know that this means that there is no prioritisation of voice over data, but I'm fine with this. When the problems occur there is nothing else using the bandwidth Sad

The Draytek box has loads of features that I use which the cheapie Vonage box doesn't, hence its place at the front of the queue.

Mmm - not sure then. Does it happen when all your PCs are turned off? You'd be amazed how much traffic a Windows machine can create downloading automatic updates and the like.

Call quality can vary a little on Vonage in my experience. How bad does the quality get? Have you tried the speed test on this site? (Click on 'Vonage Information')

Also, did you setup port forwarding on the Draytek router?

Perhaps the 30 seconds thing is just the call giving up because it realises not enough data is getting through....?

Just another thought - does your Draytek have a stateful firewall? Perhaps this could be interfering with Vonage traffic?

Hi,

I've been with Vonage for about a month. I had the same problem with the calls dropping out after 30 seconds. I got in touch with my broadband provider (Tiscali Support) and they explained that the speed of DSL wasn't high enough. I increased the speed to 2 MB and then they told me what to type in the "commands" and Vonage has worked OK ever since.

I had this problem as well and disconnected a few phones which seemed to help.

Also if the distance is too great in between phone lines this can cause signal drop.

I wonder if they make a LINE AMPLIFIER or something?
