Has anyone had any experience using Vonage over a satellite internet connection? Some providers work, others don't, the usual problems being packet loss, jitter, and the unavoidable latency. Anyone know how Vonage stacks up? Thanks.

Later....never mind, found lots of opinions in archives. Thanks anyway.

satellite is a problem cuz you receive via satellite, but you send via 56K modem right?..

if they could ever get the permissions to do 2-way transmissions on sat. then it may be better..

I have worked with the new Ka band satellite system (if you want to see a cool system for people outside of conventional broadband areas, this product is awesome!) and saw a demonstration using the Vonage product. It looked OK. The real issue will be the speed you purchase, download at 400Mb and up at 128 Mb might not be the best, but the mid level packages will probably work just fine. My company is likely to consider Vonage in the future and it will likely be over satellite on a number of sites.

You're going to get a lot more latency (i.e. delay) because of the distances. Even at the speed of light, expect latency of the better part of a second, possibly longer. Test first if you can. It might be tolerable, but it will likely be annoying.

Latency is an issue, certainly, but most pings have reply times under 600ms. A demonstration is absolutely required over satellite because some people won't be willing to put up with that. Still, for remote locations needing broadband it is a wonder, and with the price for phone calls out, all being long distance, the latency may be a small price to pay for the savings.

Latency will not be the issue. However Packet Loss will be a problem due to the "bursty" time slicing associated with satellite communications. With everyone sharing the same link, your earth terminal needs to reserve time slots for your packets both up and down. These slots are not consistent and very unfriendly with most UDP type packets. There may be newer technology out there however any tests I have run in the past have been of very poor quality.

Look at the forum posts for people with Rogers or Bell 128K service. Very few if any are happy. The VSAT service is only 128K up at maximum throughput so with someone using a PC elsewhere in the house, well, you get the picture.

The new Ka band stuff from xplornet is much better than older Ku band stuff. The upload is significantly faster than 128K IF you are willing to pay more, and download speeds over 1000K are offered. Still, the prices are reasonable for an "anywhere" broadband connection.
