Please help. We recently moved and had to go with internet satellite. My speed isn`t what it should be so I can`t use my phone at all.The quality is terrible,can`t hear or understand what person is saying.I had this same phone with Cox at other house and never had problems.The internet company can`t figure out why I have an ok download speed but very,very slow upload.I would appreciate ant help.

Download - 716 kbps Suppose to be 1.0 Mbps
Upload - 50.9kbps Suppose to be 200 Kbps

I have a Linksys PAP2 phone adapter and a Linksys WRT54G wireless router

At first thoughts this is not going to work. There is too much latency with sat connections for Voip to work. You will more then likely have to go back to landline. You may also see if there are any wireless internet providers in your area which may have less latency then the satellite.

Each time a data packet is handled by a device along the path (called a “hop”) several milliseconds of latency are induced. More importantly in the satellite world, latency is caused by the distance that the signal must travel.

Because satellite transmissions traverse a very long distance, satellite has a higher latency than a typical terrestrial connection. The GEO satellites used for two-way Internet service are located approximately 23,000 miles above the equator. This means that a round-trip transmission travels 23,000 miles to the satellite, 23,000 miles from the satellite to the remote site, and then as the TCP/IP acknowledgment is returned, another 46,000 miles on the return trip for a total round trip of about 92,000 miles. This is roughly equal to a signal traveling around the circumference of the Earth four times. Even at the near light-speed of the transmission, this accounts for more delay than found in a terrestrial network.

I disagree. The problem isn't the latency. I have the exact same problem and I can RECEIVE calls clearly and with very little delay...and that is both ways, even though they BOTH go through the same satellite connection.

The only time there is a problem is when I call someone else from my Vonage phone to a land line or cell phone (I have not been able to test it with another Vonage user).

Please do not see the word Satellite and play the latency card. That is not the problem. Vonage has worked great on satellite for many users until the past couple of months. Something in the network has changed and that is what is causing the problem. I would gladly take latency delay. This is an audio quality problem that has to be network related because it only happen on outgoing calls.

As Kevin said, you're unlikely to be happy with this, but try changing your bandwidth settings on the website to minimums.

Those speeds may be right, here is 200 Kbps to kB/s

200 Kbps is 24.41 kB/s

I hate how the avertise internet speeds, like my connection is 3 Mbps but that's only 366.21 kB/s, dang bits vs bytes

What kind of crackerjack satellite ISP are you dealing with? If your ISP can't answer that question, who can? have you checked for packet loss and what your latency times actually are?

If as you say, your upload speeds fall drastically short of what you are paying for, that is a clear-cut ISP issue.

Also, unless you have unlocked the secret to changing the speed of light, there IS going to be latency on a satellite connection no matter what you do. This can be compensated for, to a degree, by changing jitter level, packet size, etc...

How is your outbound audio on calls you place VS calls you receive? Does everyone have trouble hearing you, but you can hear them OK?

It seems to me that the audio problem you describe is a symptom of poor upload speeds.

If you PM me the acct number I can try and take a look, see if there is anything I can do.
