I've seen it posted all over but can't figure out what it means. What is QOS as it relates to a router? What does it do? Why should I have it?

The short answer is - QoS stands for "Quality of Service".

What that means practically, is that a router that supports good QoS capability allows you to set it to give a higher or lower priority to certain types of traffic vs other types. In the context of Vonage and Voip, a QoS capable router like the WRT54G or WRT54GS allows you to set the Voip traffic from your Vonage adapter to have a higher priority than traffic from websurfing, downloading or uploading files, or other activities. So, if you're doing many things on your internet connection at the same time, it will make sure that your Vonage calls still happen without choppiness or cutouts, even if it means slowing down your file transfers or the speed at which you are surfing and loading webpages.

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply. Do you know if my Belkin Pre-N router has this feature? I can't find it in the setup menu.

I've been through three routers in the last week (before buying Vonage yesterday). First the WRT54G v5, then the Linksys SRX200 and finally the Belkin pre-N. The Belkin has the best range by far and reaches corners of my house the others don't. I'd like to keep it, but so far have found a slight echo when I use the Vonage line. I've also had to disable the firewall which I'm not crazy about. I think I have a bunch of searching to do and so far haven't found a lot written in these forums about this router.

DallasFlier,

What's the difference between the WRT54G and the WRT54GS and if I wanted to setup either one with Sveasoft firmware (or whichever is the better one) to do good QOS, how would I do it? Thanks.

The WRT54G v5 no longer uses Linux, and it has half the RAM and Flash of the earlier models. So, it doesn't currently work with Sveasoft, or any of the other 3rd-party firmwares.

Yes, I heard the v5 was not a good model, however, which one would be good to get (say off of Ebay or something)?

one that isn't v5. here is how to tell and what is supported by sveasoft.

I don't know why everyone is so stuck on sveasoft or 3rd party firmware in general. unless you have one of about 3 or 4 specific needs, 3rd party firmware is basically useless. the stock firmware is great.

My stock firmware on the WRT-54G v4 works like a charm. Even QOS works great and very seldom drops below 95%. I'm using port QOS, which is simple and easy.

I tried Sveasoft, and then HyperWrt, and like Hyperwrt much better than Sveasoft.
