PostPosted: Wed Nov 23, 2005 8:05 pm    Post subject: Linksys RTP 300 - doesn't hold a dial tone - UPDATED - More Reply with quote Back to top

So - initially I was a huge walking advertisement for Vonage - but with all the problems I've had lately - I'm very close to cancelling.

1) In May I had a number of issues with calls dropping that they said required installing a new router - so they shipped me a Linksys RT31P2 Device. After many hours with their tech support, we finally got it working (they had to change multiple settings on their side). Why didn't they make these changes when they sent me the new router?!

2) November - my service quality was degrading significantly over the last two weeks
a) First it was noisy calls
b) then no incoming calls
c) then it was incoming calls were received, but the other side couldn't hear me
d) then lots of dropped calls
So after two hours with tech support on Monday, they decide the best fix is to ship me a new device

3) November - Part 2 - so today I get a new Linksys RTP 300, and I've just spent 2 more hours with the tech support line, b/c it doesn't get a dial tone. Instead I get a 1 sec dial tone, that cycles out, then resets as a new dial tone.

Any suggestions? I've got a final IP signal, just can't get any dialtone. We're already done the following
a) Reset the device and my cable modem
b) Looked at all the settings in the admin console
c) Reset the voice settings in the console to the factory defaults

I'm rapidly running out of patience with Vonage. Seems like their quality is degrading faster than they are adding customers.
--------------
So now over the past two weeks I've been dealing with Vonage - and I have a new ISP - TimeWarner, and I've even invested in a set of new phones that can be run off one base station so that I can isolate the Voip system from my home wiring. Now the problem that we have is that frequently callers cannot hear our voice during calls - it just flickers in and out but we can still hear them.

Given the other posts about TimeWarner issues in NC, and the posts about the RTP300 firmware, the saga continues. Any suggestions?

It would be nice if we could eliminate your ISP as the source of the problem. Do you have good internet connectivity with or without the RTP300 on line? If so, why not try a test call to www.testyourvoip.com to see if that give us any clues?

Here are the test results. Any and all help is appreciated!

After running the test, based on some other forum postings I also did a manual reset on the router (back panel mechanism) and now I have NO dial tone what so ever.

It appears that I have the dreaded 1.00.55 firmware.

You've got a lot of packet discards, and on the downlink, a lot of packet loss as well. If this is with the RTP on line, I'd try it again without the RTP. If you still have the problem, I'd get on the phone to your ISP and jack them up.

Following your session with customer service, is the RTP now basically functional? That is, do you have both dial tone and internet connectivity with it on line? What issues had to be solved?

After the latest session with Vonage Tech support - they had me do a voice system restore factory defaults in the Admin console. No rather than having an intermittent dialtone, I have no dialtone whatsoever.

What next?

So how did customer service leave things? I'm still concerned about the quality of your internet service, and you need to talk to your ISP about that, but a non-functional adapter is something that Vonage CS has to work with you.

In the meanwhile, if you have a friend with broadband who is willing to help, it would be interesting to carry your adapter to his house and hook it to his service. We need to know if that thing functions at all.

Good idea, especially if they have the same ISP...that packet loss is not too pretty. Also, you may try a friend with a different ISP also. And, who is your ISP?

You may also want to try downloading pingplotter at www.pingplotter.com and let it run for a while..that could show if there is a bad hop in there somewhere.
